Quitting cold turkey harmful while pregnant?

Quitting cold turkey harmful while pregnant?
I have asked the question once before, but i've yet to get ANY concrete evidence that supports the claim "quitting cold turkey causes stress that can harm a fetus." To clarify my question, i'm not debating quitting causes stress, I quit the day I found out and I was miserable-for a week. I'm debating wether or not that week is worse on a fetus than 9 months of smoke. It seems like a no brainer to me, but people keep arguing otherwise. Many of you will say "my doctor said the stress was worse"..My question is why doesn't the surgeon general's warning on packs say "Cutting down is safer than quitting"? I'm a nursing student and have yet to meet a Dr. with this theory, it seems the only people I meet who have, are those who still smoke. I'm not judging smokers! We all know the risks, and it's a choice we make. It's just if there is evidence of this wives tale (which is all I can assume it is..) I would really like to see it! Thanks so much! I wish everyone happy and healthy pregnancies! The only evidence I found... Cold Turkey Method One last method to stop smoking during pregnancy is to quit cold turkey. There is no sustained evidence that the stress incurred by quitting smoking harms the fetus. This method is considered one of the safest. Doctors claim that as long as the mother-to-be is smoke-free by the time she is 14-weeks along, then the baby will most likely be unharmed. Smoking during pregnancy is a serious matter and quitting can be very difficult. The best approach is to take one day at a time, and stay focussed on the worthy goal. Keep reminding yourself that you are doing this not only for yourself, but for the health and well-being of your baby. Regardless of which method you choose in order to quit, it is important to talk to your doctor, who will not only encourage you but may also provide you with counsellings resources. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/smoking-during-pregnancy-no-ifs-ands-or-butts.html Still interested what others know/find! I could not find legitimate solid evidence that I could site while making my argument. It is "well...My doctor said!" to "my doctors and instructors said". I've yet to get my hands on a study, or article published in a medical journal... which brings me here :)

My doctor DID tell me that. That cutting back was the way to go. I don't know the sites you could get evidence, and it's all usually a matter of opinion. Taking something away (while its in utero) that it's had it's whole in utero life,it doesn't make much sense. That's like taking away the crackhead's crack and expecting him not to freak out. I don't think it's the smartest,no,but it's really hard. My doctor told me that it's not safe to stop cold turky.

You're a nursing student and you can't get a solid answer for this? Quit smoking , especially while pregnant . 7 to 10 days of physical withdrawal is definitely better for your baby than 9 months of smoke , chemicals and nicotine . When my ex was pregnant she quit as soon as she found out ,with her doctors blessing . She went cold turkey . It didn't kill her or harm the baby . Quitting is tough . This gives you the excuse you need . Or you can wait till you have emphysema like me . Now I'm smoke free too . I'm all kinds of medicated , have trouble breathing , but I don't smoke anymore . Believe me when you start going through those ethereal risks you speak about .You'll wish you had never smoked . good luck , whatever you choose .
3 :
My Dr. told me not to quit. Quitting causes stress and will harm the baby. So I cut back to 5-7 a day. The result. 3 pregnancies, 3 big and healthy babies. All because I listened to my Dr. His advice benefited my children.

Study in Turkey.. Istanbul vs. Izmir.. which one?

Study in Turkey.. Istanbul vs. Izmir.. which one?
Hi Im thinking of studying in Turkey, and I really like both of the universities; Marmara University in Istanbul & Izmir University in Izmir. The only thing is that Im confused which on to choose, 1. I love warm weather, 2. I like to be able to travel easily. The problem is that the weather in Istanbul isn't the ideal for a person like me, but everything else sounds good. It's a lil more expensive than Izmir, since its the capital city. It has everything and Im able to travel from there anytime with out concerning about my capital. Izmir is lovely located, it has the best weather, it has beach and lovely atmosphere. People are nice and everything is a little cheaper than Istanbul. The problems are that therearen't't the same opportunities with thtravelingng part, even though it has airport and all, but I need a connecting flight from Istanbul to continue. So if my friends or family wants to vist they have to take a connecting flight (pay extra). So can some one suggest what I should choose? Im pretty confused, cos I love to study in Istanbul it has EVERYTHING but I am so weak with the weather, which I can only enjoy in Izmir. :S Pros n cons please. thx a lot Regards the first time abroad going student :)

Well education in istanbul better than izmir. Yes the weather is a bit colder than izmir right.People re far more polite in izmir than it is in İstanbul in general. İ love izmir it is where i am from. But Education in istanbul is better than izmir you ll have better opportunity. If the weather wont kill you in istanbul you should choose İstanbul. because you come to turkey for study and you should be patient for the best. I am sure you ll enjoy yourshelf more in İstanbul. and will be better life experience than izmir. Istanbu is marvelous city you ll understand when you go there it ll broaden you perspective and it is very important for you. i think it is one of the city one should experience in the world. Dont miss the chance if you have chance to go to istanbul. You wont die of istanbul cold. I am sure you ll get used to the weather in istanbul. Izmir can be cold also. It snow rather rare. It means you wont be abble to enjoy sea in most of the school term since you re weak. Dont miss the opportunity of İstanbul. İstanbul is greath culture with its bad and good side. if you think of beach in izmir. you cant go to the beach in most of the school terms. what i say is if you come to study chose the best and suffer the cold it wont kill you. You ll have fun in istanbul there re many discos bars what ever you need to enjoy. Note: Girls in izmir far more beautiful than it is in istanbul. if you have some question dont hesisate to send me a mail please.

If it were me, I'd choose Izmir. Although Istanbul is one of the most beautiful cities in the world it is also one of the busiest and most crowded, comparable to New York City. There is a lot more crime in Istanbul as with any largley populated area. Izmir is beauitful as well, and much better paced for someone going abroad for the first time. And like you said it is much cheaper than Istanbul and the weather tends to be a bit more bearable. Maybe you can start off in Izmir and see how you like it and after a few years if you aren't fully satisfied with the experience then move to Istanbul to complete your studies. Whatever you choose, good luck to you, and have fun.
3 :
i think izmir is the best choice for you.i live in istanbul but izmir is one of my favorite city in turkey.the weather, people...but the point is,ok,izmir is so beautiful but the job opportunities are not enough.if you just want to study in turkey, i think izmir is better for you.i understand your situation cause a lot of events, big concerts are in istanbul but the life is pretty complicated.but the best part for you about istanbul is you can find a lot of foreign students in there.so that's why if you need some help about living in istanbul as a foreign student, they can help us.and i don't know where you are from but i know that some airway companies have flights directly to izmir. i think you should think about that deeply cause it's really hard situation.but your requirements shows izmir belongs to you.

As a starter, let me just correct something in the description that follows the question you have posed - Istanbul is not the capital city of Turkey - Ankara is... After saying that; let me share my experiences as a person who has lived in both cities - although, I never studied my university education in neither of them. So, I will not be the best person informing as to which city offers the better higher education quality. Actually people above me already mentioned pros and cons of both cities - that is Istanbul being more crowded, and therefore offering a more hectic lifestyle - while Izmir people tend to be more relaxed than the people of Istanbul. That, I would also regard as an important distinction. So, before choosing your city - ask yourself; which lifestyle do prefer - a fast one, or a slower one? Will you be able to cope with the traffic, while you are driving or using public buses? In most of the Turkish cities, you will see a lot of people on the streets; so the population density will be similar in both cities - but, the traffic seems to be a bigger problem in Istanbul. The city centre of Izmir suffers from lack of enough green areas, in other words - parks.Sure, there are some parks in Izmir- but I would say Istanbul beats Izmir with regards to that. However, the surrounding of Izmir - the city centre, is the place where the nature offers its products; and where you will have to opportunity to 'breathe'.As you are already aware, there're beaches and forests, as well as national parks around Izmir - and they aren't too far from the city centre at all.You can reach those places with just a bus, or a minibus - and in 1 hour you're there..If you are into hiking, then, this will be a great opportunity for you.I'm sure the university you're intending to go in Izmir has hiking clubs - so you can join them and take some time off the city centre; and enjoy some scenery. On the other hand, with Istanbul - if you are in the city centre, you are stuck in the city centre!Because, Istanbul is like a little country - combination and merging of towns neighbouring each other - the area that is regarded as 'city centre' is quite huge. And the transport to the off the city limits is not as easy as it is in Izmir.I don't think in any surrounding town of Istanbul you can swim.May be you could - but surely, it's not too common; because, unfortunately the Marmara Sea isn't as clean as the Aegean Sea. However, as also mentioned above by someone; Istanbul has more social opportunities/scenes.Whatever you are into - you'll find a spot for it in Istanbul; whenever an international music group/singer visits Turkey, they make sure they are in Istanbul. Also, since there are more people in Istanbul - it means there are more younger people, and you'd find more people going out.Let me give you an example - on one of the famous streets in Istanbul - the İstiklal street, where there are all sorts of bars, clubs, cafes lined up, at around 12 midnight - you'll see the street crowded as it would be during daylight; and you'd probably bump into someone accidentally while walking because there is limited space to walk! The likelihood of this happening in Izmir is very slim. But, surely - there are places to go in the evenings in Izmir too...I didnt mean Izmir is socially dead, on the contrary - it's got things to offer - but I was just emphasising Istanbul's superiority in that field! Let me see what other aspects there are in comparing and contrasting both cities...The public transport is equally good in both cities - you won't have any problem getting around within city centres. The climate - which you are a bit worried about - sure, you got it right; Izmir winters are milder (there are days when the weather gets cold really bad - but the duration of that is shorter than of Istanbul; and in Izmir it snows seldom). Both cities have warm spring and hot summers. You also seem to be worried about the extra expenses your family members or friends have to cover when they visit you through a connection flight. The prices of internal air fares in Turkey have decreased over the years - as they have in many countries. You could fly from Istanbul to Izmir, from as little as $40 - $50. Many countries' airlines offer direct flights to Istanbul - that's for sure. But - there are plenty of direct flights taking place, especially from European countries to Izmir too.I know, a few German airline companies fly to Izmir almost daily.May be some Dutch companies too.Especially when it is summer - the intensity of flights increase to Izmir. I hope the information helps a little bit.I tried to be as objective as possible.

whats the best country to be in exchange student in as a 17 year old american guy?
my choices are Argentina Australia Austria Belgium Brazil Bulgaria Denmark Egypt Finland Germany Ghana Greece Hungary India Japan Korea Netherlands Norway Poland Romania Russia Slovakia South Africa Spain Sweden Switzerland Thailand Turkey Uruguay . criteria is i want freedom, cool girls, and to be able to communicate in english without having to only speak small talk.

I was a 17 year old guy in Switzerland and had a GREAT time. Almost everyone speaks English, plus several other languages. The country was beautiful, and the Swiss are very liberal with their young adults. I was there for the whole year, so I did have to function in German, but it wasn't required. Good luck with your choices...
2 :
you picked a lot of countries where you can't really get on just speaking english! japan and uruguay? thailand? brazil? lol... you'd definitely need to learn the language, either because english isn't all that common there, or because they don't care to use it and would rather use their own language (ie japan)!! i say don't worry so much about the language part... if you're going to study abroad for any worthwhile amount of time, you'll be able to pick up a language there and do fine. i did it! and it will look great on college apps if this is what you're doing before college. but otherwise, if you really want to be able to speak english all the time and more than just small talk, you've significantly narrowed down the number of countries you could study in. oh, and all countries have "cool girls," so i guess that depends on what you mean by cool? as in they go out and party? or they're intelligent and beautiful and you can pick them up on campus? and a huge part of study abroad IS freedom... however if you will be underage when you go, the rules may be different for you, for example if you're still in high school... so you'll have to check with the programs you're interested in and ask about that to know for sure. check out ciee.org for some good programs.
3 :
Most European countries have good English programs. Of course it varies (if you look at your foreign language class, I'm sure some kids do quite well and others can barely say a sntence, even thought they ahve taken the same classes). I am on exchange in Germany and when I arrived, I felt everyone spoke really good English. Then I realized everyone speaks English and a few people speak good English -- and it's the ones with good English who talked to me in English. The others COULD speak English, but were not very good and were quite nervous about speaking to a native English speaker (once I assured them all that my part of Canada does not speak French -- Germans know Canada speaks French and English but many haven't got much of an idea as to WHERE). However, that said, I have several friends from South America who speak English fluently. Not PERFECTLY, but I can talk to them just like I talk to native English speakers. Their mistakes are only little things, like saying 'swimmed' instead of 'swam' now and then. But a foreign exchange isn't about speaking English in a non-English speaking country. It's about learning a new language; a lot of programs will not be happy if you are not learning the language. It's okay to speak English at the start (I would have no friends if I no one had spoken English to me), but one of the huge points of exchange is to learn a language if you go to a country where the language is not your native one. I was sort of not-dating this guy and while most of the reason for our not-break up was other stuff, part of it was he spoke English to me, and how was I supposed to learn any German if I started dating a guy who spoke English to me? But I digress. South America is good for partying. Europe too, but a different culture. Funny enough, I feel like the 'Canadian' parties I went to seem 'wild' here, when they were just normal parties. But Germans don't do the 'liquor in one hand, chase in the other, out at night around a bonfire (or in a house in winter) with the smell of weed in the air' thing. It took me awhile to get that when I went to a 'party' with someone, I should not except something at a house or anything, but rather something where ID is checked, money to get in is paid, there's a DJ, and drinks are sold (kinda like a school dance, minus teachers/rules and with alcohol). Plus all the girls get dressed to kill and put on their most uncomfy shoes. It's fun, but different from home. And as an exchange student, it's not hard to get attention. I'm a girl so I guess it's different, but I end up getting a lot of free drinks -- which is cool with me! Freedom is going to depend on where you live (is it safe? can you get around easily?) and your family (do they have strict rules?) and to a smaller degree, your program. I am with Rotary and some of my friends nearby are not allowed to go to Köln (Cologne) for Karneval* because it's "too dangerous". (* Basically 5 days of drinking in costumes, as I understand it, and apparently a very very big deal as people have been mentioning it since I arrived here. They all put on "poor you" faces when i say we don't have it in Canada.)

If you want something completely different from back home, go to Ghana. English is the official language but when will you ever have an opportunity to live with an African family? Ghana is a beautiful country with great beaches, and stunning nature with lots of big animals - elephants, hippos, lions, leopards, many types of monkeys and birds. Plus any family that can take in a student is going to be a wealthy family so you wont be living in a hut with no toilet, youll probably have maids and drivers and cooks. And Ghanaian girls are gorgeous. India would also be very interesting. You could go to Europe at any time but somewhere like India or Ghana would really be a change

I just chose 5 regions to talk about ( istanbul, ankara, izmir, antalya and trabzon ) because turkey is too big and I just have 1hour presentation. so could you please help me with your suggestions ? here is my plan 1.a brief introduction about the history of Turkey ( the ottoman empire / Ataturk ) 2. the culture of Turkey 1. Istanbul ( topkapi / blue mosque / dolmabahce / misir bazar ) 2.Anakra 3.Izmir ( main monuments ) 4.Trabzon 5.Antalya 2. The folklore music and dance ( horon / kasik oyunu /kolbasti ) the turkish cuisine ( food like imam bayildi / iskender/ sis kebab / bakleva ...) any idea please ? Thank you in advance :)

as a turk i feel so proud right now, that if i knew french i would have created the whole presentation for you. i think your points are good, but i don't know if you would have a lot to talk about, about Trabzon and Antalya. To me they don't have much significance main points: where turks come from (central asia mostly) turkic empires turkish culture (of today) / Music turkish society religion Ottoman - French Relations Ataturk World War 1 Topkapi palace Turkish Food Turkey in the Korean War http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/country_profiles/1022222.stm feel free to ask me for anything or if you have any questions the reason that i have a low rating is because: apparently i have a whole bunch of enemies on this site that keep track of my answers and give a low rating. However, i updated my privacy settings and this shouldn't happen anymore

A brief introduction about history should cover a little more than the Ottoman Empire and Ataturk. Maybe this could help: http://tripatlas.com/Turkish_people Read the history part, and etymology, add a little about the Ottomans, and Ataturk, Subtract a little, there you are, the introduction is ready. You probably have a lot of information from the internet. But I think these are good links. So, take a look. http://www.allaboutturkey.com/ http://www.kultur.gov.tr/EN/belge/2-14750/culture.html http://www.turkish-cuisine.org/english/index.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_cuisine http://www.turkishculture.org/ I'd include Capadoccia and Hierapolis in my presentation, because they are unique. Otherwise, you seem to be on the right track.

Here is a wonderful site that you can get detail information . The site has also slideshows which could be a good resource for your presentation. http://www.adiyamanli.org/all_about_turkey.htm Good luck!

New Jersey is a big state. You don't say which airport you are coming into or where you are going. If you are a student, maybe the school where you are going will have a room for you, or at least be able to tell you where to find one nearby. Here is a link that may be helpful http://hotel-guides.us/new-jersey/nj-hotels.html Good luck.

Here's an important question that will help you narrow it down: How many foreign languages do you know? If the answer is zero, you may want to consider a country which speaks your native language. But, don't fret. I know a lot of people who knew almost nothing about the main language of a country they did a foreign exchange to. If you go this route, consider taking language classes before you leave (independently or through your school or a nearby school), or taking language classes while in that country. If you do know a foreign language or two, even just a bit, go to a country which has that language as its first or second language. Also, how long have you been away from your family and friends? Do you get homesick easily? If you haven't been away from them for long, or you do get homesick easily, you should go to a neighboring country, or one on the same continent; or, you could go to a country that is farther away but you won't be gone for as long. One last thing to consider is this: how open are you to seeing different religions, different people, and different ways of life without instantly pressing your beliefs upon them? Any country you go to which isn't your own will have people vastly different from you. Are you willing to learn about new people and things without trying to change them into who you are? :) Personally, from your list, I'd pick Japan. Not only is it on a different continent, it's pretty much the technological and fashion capital of the universe, but those are some things I'm interested in. Look into a little history and culture about each of these countries before you make your final decision!!!
2 :
I think the best thing you can do is to decide what is important to you. Ask yourself questions like: -Do you want to learn a new language? -Do you want to get to know a completely different culture and adjust or you just want something with a little more familiarity? -Do you want to go to a place that has excellent weather conditions? -Do you want to go to a country where most people do speak English? LANGUAGE/CULTURE: I would definitely recommend a country that you do know something about and you can speak its language at a certain level. Even if you don't speak Spanish, it is a good option because that language is pretty easy compared to the others and most Spanish universities offer several classes in English. This way, you would have a good opportunity to learn a new language because don't expect too much from a language that you are not familiar with at all. I don't think anybody could learn more than some words in a semester. That was my experience at least. If language learning is not the reason why you want to be an exchange student, Denmark is also a great option since everybody speaks perfect English there. It is a very nice country, by the way. I'm from Hungary and I can tell you Hungarian is a very difficult language just like most of the languages of the other countries you listed. I have met many exchange students and although they felt great here, I kinda felt that they were a little lonely and sometimes they were afraid to communicate with others. They would have loved to learn the language but that is impossible in only one academic year or even less. If you have any questions, feel free to message me because I might be able to give you some advice if you have specific questions since I have visited or lived in a lot of countries you have on your list.

Speech and Debate: How do you feel about this and why?
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its military and/or police presence in one or more of the following: South Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, and Turkey. I am a debate student, and as a team captain this coming year, I am doing research for writing my speeches. Resources that you use would be helpful, preferably .edu, .gov, .org websites.

3 :
1) The US could and should reduce its military commitments in Both South Korea and Japan. The reason why I say this is that even with the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan the US still has enough long range bombers (IE B-52's, B-1's, and B-2's) to safely meet our military commitments to the defense of Japan and South Korea. Also the 82nd Airborne has the alart brigade which can be anywhere in the world in 18 hours. Further the US Navy's pacific fleet further has enough Carrier Battle Groups, and couple that with the USMC base at Camp Pendlton, and with some of the Ohio Class SSBN's being retrofitted to be Cruise missile carriers if North Korea ever did cross the 38th parrarell again it would only be a matter of an hour before we would be able to start honoring our treaty commitments with airstrikes, and within 18 to 24 hours we could be moving ground forces in to help reinforce South Korea. 2) We already in the middle of drawing down or military forces from Iraq so this is a mute point. Email back on this one this could be a great discussion.
4 :
that statement is short sighted, and should not be supported. Maintaining a military presence in regions of national interest helps to protect the nation. 1. It helps establish friendly relationships with locals -maintaining military bases overseas generally guarantees on base jobs for foreign nationals. many of our bases, even in the middle east, employ locals as janitors, in on-base restaurants, and base/post exchanges. military members also contribute directly to the local economy by puchaseing souvenirs, dining in local restaurants (where allowed) etc. Our experience with unconventional warfare proves that positive relationships with the local population is a necessary component of achieveing national influence in regions of interest. 2. Foreign bases increase our ability to project military power -having soldiers overseas increases our response time to international conflict. it allows us to have men and supplies on the ground within hours of natural disasters, outbreak of small conflict, and to react quickly to direct attacks on our national interest, like after 9-11. Being able to respond quickly to international incidents increases the threat we pose to our enemies, and the comfort we can provide to friends. 3. We have the people to support these deployments! - even with our current foreign committments, Congress has authorized "force shaping," laying off military members. The willingness to serve is still present, and the DoD is having to force people out of the military, as well as decrease the numbers of new members, to fit within the budget. If Congress would redirect some of the funding currently supporting unsustainable social programs, the military could easily garner the troops necessary to make foreign deployments even shorter, and less difficult on families. If we remove our military from these politically hot regions, we will effectively cede our influence in the region to some other group. We had an opportunity it the 1980's to build up influence in Afghanistan after supporting the Afghan insurgents and the mujahideen in thier fight against the communist central government and the Soviet invasion they invited. However, like now, we were weary of leaving too big a footprint and getting over involved in the region, and we failed to put or leave troops on the ground. Once the Americans and Soviets left Afghanistan, Pakistan inserted the Taliban, an extremist group friendly to Pakistan, that secured thier Afghan border, allowing the Pakistanis to shift focus and troops to the Indian border. We missed our opportunity for influence then, and should not make the same mistake now that we have another chance. Maintaining influence in these regions is the easiest way to protect our national interests. msg me, i'd like to hear your response!

Can I leave Schengen area and return as a tourist for 90 days after a year on a visa?

Can I leave Schengen area and return as a tourist for 90 days after a year on a visa?
I've been living in France for a year on an au pair/student visa, can I leave Schengen for a few days, i.e. Turkey, and come back to Schengen for 90 days as a tourist right at the expiration of my visa? I just want to make sure that I'm not breaking any laws and will be permitted back in Schengen in the future.

Yes you can go to the embassy and apply
2 :
You don't say what country you're actually from. But if it's the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or any other country that has visa waiver with the Schengen Zone, then it is possible for you to do this. A day or two before your au pair/student visa expires, leave the Schengen Zone and go to the UK or other non-Schengen country, stay for a few days then go back to the Schengen Zone. Make sure you get your passport stamped when you re-enter and you'll have a full 90 days to travel the Schengen area. You mention going to Turkey. Just be aware that you will need to buy a visa at the Turkish border, before entering the country. Not really worthwhile if you'll only be there for a few days.

Watch American TV shows, make friends with people who speak English, read english books, etc.
2 :
Study it. Get a tutor to help you.
3 :
you should try reading lots of english novels, books at a library. that really helped me. you can also try watching english movies, much really anything related to english helps.
4 :
What exactly are you having difficulty with? If it's understanding spoken English, then watch British, American or Australian TV. If it's writing, then practice writing in English on a public site like a blog or Hubpages. If it's speaking, then you'll have to find someone, preferably a native speaker but that's not necessary, to practice with...maybe an English-speaker who wants to practice their Turkish (you could set up "speaking dates" that are 50% English-only and 50% Turkish-only)
5 :
Actually, broadening/improving one's language skills is a very broad concept, it should be done in more than one ways at the same time which is highly recommended. One can NOT become better ONLY in one area, say, chatting, one MUST improve skills in ALL dimensions of the language! Learning language well requires being as active as possible and making the learning as FUN for oneself as possible. Taking lessons is always important, but equally important are these: 1) Listen/watch: Keep listening to internet radio stations like BBC, watch TV shows in English (use only subtitles, NOT voice dubbing in case you are not a native English speaker!), etc. 2) Write/communicate: Try to find discussion forums from the web about things that you find interesting and FUN (music/various artists, hobbies, etc.) and start communicating there with other people using only English. Start using instant messaging systems in case you find some new friends or start emailing them. Please do NOT be afraid of making mistakes or hesitating, because even native speakers do make mistakes and do hesitate at times! The more you enjoy communicating, the better! 3) Buy yourself a proper dictionary, and each time when you see a strange word that you do not understand, look it up. Putting words into their CONTEXT is one of the best ways to broaden one's vocabulary and grammar knowledge, the more you read and write the better. Memorising is NOT the best way to go with learning vocabulary, grammar or any other language areas! For idioms, you should buy an all-English dictionary which explains the words in English and shows you examples of how to use the words. The main point in ANY language learning is to make it as fun as possible for yourself. Try to find topics that INTEREST you, read online newspapers (Times, Guardian, Independent...), listen to BBC/NBC and other radio stations online, if you find a discussion forum for e.g. your favourite hobby or your idols in music do participate there, etc. The key word here is CONTEXT, which means that it is easier to learn new words and their usage as well as grammar when you use/see them in their real CONTEXT. The more you see and hear the new words in their context and the more you use them in your speech & writing, the easier it becomes to remember their meanings and correct spelling. Do NOT be afraid of making mistakes though, because even native speakers do make mistakes and do hesitate at times! I'm sorry there is NO EASY WAY out with this, one really must develop language skills in ALL these language "levels" or dimensions in order to reach better language skills!! Last but not least: NEVER EVER use ANY online translators, they are nothing but utter rubbish!! English is practically EVERYWHERE in the online world these days, you just have to use your imagination to find it! Learning pace is always personal, it takes the time it takes so there is no reason to hurry it up too much. If you do, you will not learn so well. Also, please learn the basics of the standard English first before advancing to finer details like dialects/accents. A word of warning though: Do stay well away from overrated, overpriced and overhyped language "gimmicks" such as Rosetta Stone, they really are NOT worth for checking out! Good luck!

Is an animal considered a predator if it feeds on dead animals, or is it a just a consumer?
One of my students asked if a turkey vulture, feeding on a dead animal is condsidered a predator since it is eating an animal. Or not because it didn't hunt and kill the food.
Zoology - 5 Answers

1 :
It's considered a scavenger
2 :
Animals that eat meat are carnivores, which can either be predators or scavengers. Predetors hunt and kill their own food. Scavengers mainly feast on the remains of other animals. There is no animal that exhibits the behavior of a pure predator or a pure scavenger.
3 :
Its a predator
4 :
It is a detritivore.
5 :
The Turkey Vulture is classified as a scavenger. It is not called a predator, because that is reserved for active hunters. To my knowledge, there are no known instances of a Turkey Vulture hunting and killing for food, so it is probably as close to a pure scavenger as you can find.

What kind of deli or sandwich meat should I buy? And from where?

What kind of deli or sandwich meat should I buy? And from where?
I shop at Kroger, Meijers, Costco, and K-Mart. I'm a college student. I'll be visiting K-Mart tomorrow and what should should of deli or sandwich meat should I buy? Everything I buy has 430 or more sodium in it, like wtf. I eat turkey, roast beef, and chicken (in other words, i eat everything).

Reuben sandwich from K-mart

I live pretty much a low or sodium free dietary life style, and unfortunately I have yet to find lunch meat that is below the 300mg safe limit. I work in the retail food industry, and lunch meat contains extreme amounts of sodium as a preservative for longer shelf life. What I do is buy the reduced sodium lunch meats, but they can be hard to find but Meijers being your best bet. Being away from home doesn't give you many options to low sodium foods. Whole roasted chicken is an option, those do contain sodium, but not as much because their store shelf life is measure in hours. I buy the day old roasted chicken that have been refrigerated and marked down to 1/2 the cost and use it for many dishes including sandwiches. Good luck. Giant Midget should change their name to Mental Midget.
3 :
I work in a deli so here's my advice... If you want something low on sodium it's difficult to find stuff like that. Most of the pre-ordered meats have high sodium concentrate. I would suggest stuff that's baked or cooked instore. That way there is not very much salt. If you don't mind the salt, the most common sandwich meat is Black Forest ham, it's a simple ham and is relatively cheap. If you want something with a little more flavour I would suggest smoked ham which is very tasty but usually high in salt. Honey or Old Fashioned are also common hams. Usually baked or cooked instore turkey or roast beef are the best I find because they taste like real meat, the ordered packaged stuff tastes false to me. Smoked chicken breast is also very good but again is high in salt. Fat-free stuff is another way to stay healthy with meat. Costco I've heard actually has a pretty good deli (i don't shop there), however, I've never bought any meat from there so I can't say. Hope that helped.

Job Opportunities in Turkey?

Job Opportunities in Turkey?
Merhaba, my Turkish friends. I am an American student, and I am looking at possibly moving to Turkey within the next 5 years. I have already completed over a year of college, but I have not yet decided on what to study. I want to study something that would open up jobs for me both in America and in Turkey. I am absolutely interested in teaching English, so I will be getting a certificate in TESOL (or a similar program). I do know, however, that it is beneficial to have a degree along with a TESOL certificate. So at this point, I am considering all the different things I could study. Hospitality Administration is something I am leaning towards, but it would only be an Associate's Degree. Would that be enough? I have a passion for cultures and tourism, and I would love to be thinking about those passions when I'm looking for a job. What will employers be looking for? What kind of a degree would be beneficial? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, friends.

OK, if you are already interested in getting a TESOL certification, you are good to go. Most Turkish institutions who operate in teaching English as a secondary language do not require you to have any other degree above a High School diploma if you are a native speaker of English. However, I would recommend getting an English or an Education degree just so that you are more accustomed to teaching, also while you are studying for your degree you could take some Turkish classes just to be on the safe side. And if you want to work in a private school teaching English, they might ask about previous teaching experience that involved teaching children.
2 :
hopdedik answered some of te points and i wantto clarify just one point, hospitality management of sth like that should have been the last thing to be thought as an investment for living in Turkey because all the system is entirely different here plus you should have an ultimate atlent of communication. I dont like to put people down but you should be very very well prepared for that. I would also recommend international relations, management, finance or any other degree if you would like to be hired in Turkish univerities and continue your life as an academician. However, it is much more easier to come and work here after studying in one of the good ranking US universities, so you better watch out what you d like to study that wouldnt be a branch whose industry is underdeveloped here in Turkey such as nuclear energy or genetics. On the other hand, with a civil engineering diploma you can find aquite many companies to hire you, for instance... Search more, good luck!

Hmm, i graduated from an american highschool, so i know a bit about the foreigner teachers. i remember we had teachers with various degrees, there were the ones with PhDs and master's degrees and also highschool graduates with certificates. We had very good turkish teachers esp good at teaching grammar, so any native speaker english teacher was ok. foreigners usually did speaking and reading. but i didn't meet any foreigner teacher that i found insufficient. of course a degree is better. but i guess roughly a certificate is enough. it's been few years since i graduated but i guess the conditions are still the same. in schools giving english education (most of the courses are in english) you'll be paid the highest. there are many of these schools in istanbul, ankara, izmir especially, you may contact the administrations of these schools. http://www.sev.org.tr/ my school is under that association. there are six schools listed on top of the page, in the green area, under the topic "eÄŸitim", go to the website of each school, choose english and read about employment opportunities. and also that is one of the best private schools in turkey http://portal.robcol.k12.tr/ usually foreigner teachers go abroad for the higher salaries, stay 2-3 years and go back to their countries. but there were teachers who stayed in turkey for long years and even got citizenship. some of my teachers were here before i was born.... so you may stay longer if you want. i have less idea about the hospitality business. it is improving, but i guess it is different than in us. there are famous hotels like hilton, ritz carlton, so i guess it would be a good start if you contacted the administrations of these hotels. my friend had a degree in business from germany, and did internship in a similar hotel. in turkey, there is a degree "tourism administration" and they work in hotels after they finish the uni. in various positions.. good luck!

You can easily find Palestinian or citizen of UAE friends in the ones which are in Istanbul and Ankara. Both of Istanbul and Ankara are very beautiful and safe cities to live. Pakistan national with valid UK Student Visa. Will i be given Turkish Visa on entry?
I am a Pakistan national with valid UK Student Visa. I want to visit Antalya (Turkey) to attend a conference. I have read on Turkish foreign offices website, Turkish Consulate in London Website and Turkish Embassy in Pakistan website that a Pakistan national with valid UK / Schengen visa may be given 'Sticker type visa' for a month. I have tried to contact Turkish Consulate in London and Turkish Embassy in Pakistan through phone / email but have not been able to get a response from them. I have not travel agent as i have booked my flight online. Can any one confirm /deny the above mentioned information. Cheers

You will still need to apply for a visa to enter Turkey because the UK visa you hold is a student visa. The student visa solely allows one to study in the UK not the freedom to travel.
2 :
You can get a one month single entry tourist visa on arrival. Holding a valid Schengen visa or a visa issued by the U.K. or the United States exempts from the visa application in advance at the Consulate. The visa fee is US$ 20 or € 15. You must show availability of sufficient funds (at least US$ 50 [~£ 33.30] per day of stay). http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa .. http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_website_client.cgi?SpecData=1&VISA=&HEALTH=&page=both&NA=PK&AR=00&DE=TR&VT=GB&EM=GB&PASSTYPES=PASS&user=SKYWEB&subuser=SKYWEB1 .. If you check the website the first answerer has provided you can read: Footnote 10) Please note that you are required to have a certain amount of money (50 $ per day) while you enter Turkey. Footnote 19) You require visa to enter to Turkey. Valid UK, Schengen or USA visa holders can obtain 30 days single entry sticker type of visa on arrival in Turkey (tourists or business visitors only). You require to submit, minimum 6 months valid passport, accommadation details and return ticket. All other type of visa applicants need to apply to this Consulate General. If you would like to obtain your visa through this Consulate General please make an online appointment. Remarks: I do not recommend to get the visa in advance at the Consulate. It will involve a fee of £ 36.00 whereas you can buy € 15.00 for about £ 12.85

Since i have read so much about Turkey, i would also like to visit other places, other cities, they have showed me a book, and i was amazed.. I vacationed in the Turkish Riviera for 2 weeks, and I found that it paled in comparison to other Mediterranean destinations. The water and the beaches are not very clean, however the shopping is EXCELLENT!
2 :
my list would be: 1. Istanbul (for history, culture and to see how east blends with west) You should visit Sultanahmet, Hagia Sophia, The Grand Bazaar (great for shopping), Topkapi palace, Bosphorus Bridge, Ortakoy, have a boat trip... and if you have time, you should visit: 2. Cappadocia (to see how miracles can happen on earth) 3. Fethiye Region (to enjoy the sun, sand and sea) I hope you enjoy your stay there, and will have the chance to see these places... have a nice and safe trip:))
3 :
For an italian, our southern may have different versions you can see in Italia, i recommend you to visit Eastern Black Sea region from Ordu to Georgian border. Nothing looks like Italia except hazelnut.
4 :
Turkey has a lot of nice tourish destinations. I would reccomend purchasing (or finding in a library) a book called Eye Witness Guide to Turkey, if you are planning a trip here or want to know more about it in general. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksea... A great thing about Turkey is that they are very open and frienly to foreigners. It seems like the Turks are generally interested in knowing more about foreign people. However, they will always ask you questions about what you think about Turkey. People are very nationalistic here. But, they have the right to be because they have a great country and a very interesting culture. Turkey is a great travel destination. Since the Byzantine and Ottoman Empries were both centered here, and the Roman and Greek empires built a lot of cities here, there is a lot of history to see. Also, Istanbul has all the modern nightclubs, cafes, bars, etc. that are really cool. I've partied at the best LA, Buenos Aires, London and New York clubs and I can tell you that Istanbul's nightlife is just as good. So if you are into that scene than Istanbul is the place for you. If you like nice beach towns check out Antalya or Izmir. If you want a less touristy beach destination Mersin would be a good choice. There is also a petrified waterfall in Turkey that I've been wanting to check out. I guess there are some hot springs in a place called Pamukkale, and the minerals in the water there hardened over time. So, you can sit in the hot springs and look at solidified waterfalls. I haven't had a chance to go yet, but it sounds really cool! Definitely don't pass up a chance to visit Turkey if you can! Just like any other place, travel smart. Don't wander into the bad neighborhoods in Istanbul or over by the Iraqi border. You'll be fine.

There are so many things you can see in Istanbul.First of all, Aghia Sofia, the big Basilica the symbol of Byzantine times. In the same olace, Sultanahmet square, are the principal monuments, such as top Kapi, Blue Mosque, Aghia Irini.Dont forget to visit Fener, in Keratios, where it is situated theOrthodox Patriarcate,Kariye Cami today(Moni tis Choras). The cistwerns als, the archeologic museum, and a tour to the islands(Prighipos-Buyukada)worths the effort, and a tour also in the asiatic part. In the asiatic part of Istanbul, which is very developped, i suggest you also the destrict of Bostanci, very elegant, and fom there oyu take the boat to the islands. In the other part, dont miss the Istiklal Caddesi(Megali Odos tou Pera)so animated, the church of the Trinity, and the school of Zappeion.Eat kazandibi in Nisantasi(an elegant destrict).. Visit the Tower of Galata, and the closed Bazar... For this wonderful city, we need pages to write. Now, cponcerning nthew other aprts fo Turkey, i suggest you the thrkish Capri, which means Marmaris. It is all green, so beautiful, and with a castle on it..Thats why they call it green Marmaris. It ois calm, so many people yet, but Icmeler, Turunc are 2 wonderful places where you will see also small artificial lakes.. Bodrum too, famous for its nightlife, Kusadasi, and absolutely, Efesos, Militos, Didima,Pamukkale... Turkey is safe, there is no problem, you ll see police everywhere, dont worry. What is an easy and yummy ethnic dish to make?

What is an easy and yummy ethnic dish to make?
I'm a college student with access to a grocery store. I like cooking so thats not a problem. What's something easy to make that doesnt have beef in it? Pork, chicken, ground turkey, crab, shrimp, fish is all fine. I usually like Indian, Thai, Mexican, Cuban, Filipino, Ethiopian, and Moroccan foods. So maybe something along these lines. (although trying something new would be nice too) I also love anything really spicy!!

A Mediterranean hummus is the easiest thing ever to make, and you can make it as spicy as you like, save it in the fridge and eat it with chips, or spread it on sandwiches. Can I get a US visa from a country that is not my home country?

Can I get a US visa from a country that is not my home country?
Hi, I am from Turkey and currently in US with an F2 visa. I'll change my visa status to F1 since I'll be a student. Can I go to US Embasy in Canada and change my visa from F2 to F1? I have I20 from the university I'll attend. I do not want to change the status in US since it might take between 2 to 4 months and I do not have too much time. I think I'll go to Canada.

No, but if you have your new I-20 student form and are properly registered in SEVIS, you can apply for a visa interview appointment. You'd have to be interviewed before you could be considered for the F1 visa. You can change status in the US from F2 to F1 without an interview, but to get a visa, you'd need to appear in person, be fingerprinted, and have an interview.

How do I best fight the Creationist in my High School?

How do I best fight the Creationist in my High School?
I'm a 17 year old Junior in an American Department of Defense Dependent School in Turkey. There are some students that want Creationism taught as part of the curriculum and I don't want that to happen. What do I do?

If it's a young earth creationist forget it he is a lost soul
3 :
Talk to the head of the school and share your feelings with them. I don't think it's right to teach it in schools either...Well good luck!:)
4 :
Give in and join them. You cant win because you are arguing against truth.
5 :
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the government of Turkey, and whether or not they embrace the separation of church and state. There might not be anything you can do about it, unlike here in the states.
6 :
protest. wear a t-shirt that says "teach me evolution"
7 :
The only way to fight creationism (aka ignorance) is with knowledge. They probably will be too stubborn, though, so just talk to an adult that you know is on your side and have them help you.

Its not gonna happen..........Schools dont often teach religion if its a public school. So you dont need to beat up anyone.
11 :
I went to a DoD school when I was growing up. I believe they get their curricula centrally, and the agendas are the same for all DoD schools. I could be wrong though, it's been a long time. I don't know what point those kids are trying to make. The Biblical account of creation is just a story. There's really nothing to "teach"....Just real Genesis, and you're all set. Then you can go back to real science, lol.
12 :
Throw some dirt at them, and tell them to make you a human being
13 :
One thing I want to know is: How would one "teach" creationism in school?
14 :
Sounds fair, sounds reasonable. Why not? Never be afraid of these things. You don't HAVE to take the course, you know? Then Creationists could learn science from a view they understand. This is intolerant.
15 :
First, find out if there is a problem. Ask a school administrator if there is a proposal on the table to teach creationism and, if so, will it be considered. If the answer to both questions is "yes," you have a problem. Tell your parents and ask them to intervene. You might also get help from the National Center for Science Education or other organizations in the United States.
16 :
Study. Ace the test. This is what creationists have to do with evolution. If asked if we believe something different, the class finally takes a turn toward critical thinking instead of the usual insomnia cure.
17 :
One of the best defenses against Creationism is the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It goes like this - if you teach one form of Creationism, then you have to teach them all (most Creationists are careful to say "an intelligent creator" rather than "god" so they don't make their agenda too blatant) So become a Pastafarian (member of Flying Spaghetti Monsterism) and demand equal time. The Church or the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a valid religion, and it's creation myth is pretty objectionable to Christians. ((I won't go into too much detail, but it involves pirates, strippers, and a beer volcano). They have done this before - with some success. The Flying Spaghetti Monster has been used to protest all kinds of things. Plus, the religion itself is very cool, being based on logic, kindness, and common sense. Below is the link to the FSM site. Check it out to see how the FSM has been used to fight dogma andoppressionn for years. http://www.venganza.org RAmen

give up...they will win. they "created" the opportunity

Remember the battle is not Yours...when it's time God will open that door for you to walk right in.

Turkey baster?

Turkey baster?
Is that an effective alternative to disposable douches or enemas? My man is a clean-freak, and likes it when I use those disposable enemas. But to be quite frank, they are expensive for daily use. I'm a full-time student. Have any of you tried a simple turkey baster with a warm water? Is it effective? Is there another trick I don't know about?

Might not be a bad idea. Just wash the turkey baster before using it on Thanksgiving. True story: a male friend and I were pondering awhile back on how we could have a baby together but not have to have sex or pay a lot of money to get it done professionally. Our solution was a turkey baster. Of course, it was just hypothetical. We never tried it. I swear!
2 :
GROSS!
3 :
You can't be serious...
4 :
If he's that much of a "clean freak", then why doesn't he just use your throat?
5 :
I'm not sure if they still sell them, but old fashioned douche bags. They will work just like an enema, but without the cost of the disposables. =)
6 :
Sorry I can't really help you, but it couldn't harm you. In a colon cleansing they stick a tube with water and run it up there, so what would be the difference with a turkey baster.
7 :
I saw this advertised in an adult magazine. It's a device that hooks up to any shower. You can use to clean yourself in the shower. It would cost you a few buck at first, but then you could use it indefinitely.
8 :
small chocolate bar can be surprising & fun. baster with warm milk.
9 :
I never tried that, and yes disposables are expensive. My only concern would be hygienic. It would have to be sterilized somehow, just to be sure - before and after.
10 :
Couldn't hurt...can't say that i've used one and girls well...we don't douche or shouldn't...it is bad for our natual PH.....good luck with that!
11 :
You can buy an enema bag / hot water bottle from wal-mart or any other store like wal-mart they are cheap reusable you can add soap if you like or a mild cleanser just let air dry and put away when your done you can use it right in the shower or over the toilet
12 :
You know what else works? Those Zepryhills Sport Cap bottles. Just plug it up there, give it a good squeeze, and you'll be free of unwanted "particles" in no time!!
13 :
Just don't get too attached to it... JK. Sounds like a good rational approach to the problem on hand. Martha Stewart would be proud!!!!
14 :
Not a bad idea actually.
15 :
Douches and drugstore enemas have chemicals in them to make them work and aren't good for frequent use. Warm soapy water (mild soap) is best. I don't know if they still come that way, but hot water bottles used to come with a hose and enema tip for either enemas or douching.
16 :
Yes, you can buy a special attachment for a regular shower. These stainless steel wands can be used for cleanout - just make sure you keep the water temperature luke-warm, and the pressure low. Most sex stores carry these, or you can find them online. They'll cost a bit up front but it'll pay for itself pretty quickly. Here's a link to one on the web - lots of stores have them: http://catalog.leathermasters.com/category/?id=163
17 :
Ohhhh NO, not a Turkey Baster! Go to the drugstore, buy an enema bag, get a pitcher that has a water filter and get some sea salt. Vitamen E capsules or KY Jelly is required for lube too. Give yourself a real enema, a high enema is good to really get cleaned out. Use filtered water and a tablespoon of sea salt per quart to keep the salinity on par with the blood or else you will deplete your electrolytes. There are plenty of web sites that have great info on enemas. "Enema Tips" is probably the best. Turkey Baster! I'm not coming to see you at Thanksgiving.
