The best mean of transportation since you will be in Thessaloniki is the "Filia/Dostluk Train." The journey is overnight and it takes about 11 hours. Here is a very good website that will help you : http://www.letsgoistanbul.com/tren.htm I am sure you will like Thessaloniki and also Istanbul is a magical city that you should not miss visiting. Enjoy !

You can check with a travel agency or here http://www.metroturizm.com.tr/ they operate a buss line from Salonika to Istanbul every day 2-3 times. Very reliable. You should expect to pay about €40-50

As far as I know the train connection is not operated anymore. I don't have any information on buses; for plane tickets, better to check the companies web sites for normal and special offer rates.

Unless you want to spend most of your time wearing a burkha, I'd recommend Russia. Women in Turkey who don't respect the local culture are harassed unmercifully, according to a buddy of mine who is currently stationed at Incirlik Air Base. Why put up with that crap?

Russia or Turkey, for what? Both are very different places. Russia is more a problem for visa than Turkey. Both countries are not english spoken. and where do you want to go there, in both countrioes are no-go areas for fighting and war.

I have a friend whose son just came back from Turkey. He was VERY uncomfortable there. He was supposed to stay the full school year, and was so uncomfortable, especially when leaving the central, protected areas, and because of unrest, that he cut his stay short at the end of one semester. I would DEFINITELY not recommend Turkey right now, based on that...look more into Russia.

Turkey's weather is awesome! It is similar to Greece! And Turkey has more greek and roman ruins that Greece and Rome! My advice - pick up a history book and see whose history you like more!

Ok, it's obvious the first guy who answered your question doesn't know the first thing about Turkey. The air base is pretty much Little America, so I wouldn't trust his friend's perception of Turkey to begin with. First of all, nobody wears a burkha in Turkey, and only some women wear headscarves. In fact, until this last academic year, it was illegal to even wear the headscarf on university campus. Secondly, the culture is so warm and friendly. You will be treated like their guest the whole time you are there. It's not really that dangerous. It's really affordable, and has great places to visit on the weekends and holidays. I would recommend, dying your hair, though, if you're blonde, and don't like guys staring at you. Also, find a trustworthy man (prefferably American) to keep an eye out for you. Respectable women don't go out alone after dark in Turkey. Lastly, no matter where you end up going, try to find a least one person from close to home. It helps with adjusting to your new home.

How much money should I take on vacation to Turkey & Greece for 1 week?
I'm an American student going to Turkey for a school trip, but we've decided to extend our stay for some fun downtime. I've already paid for our trains and lodging and just need some advice about how much spending money I should take for food everyday and a few bar nights (plus if there's museums/sites that charge entrance that'd be helpful too). We're going to spend 4 days in Istanbul, 2 in Thessaloniki and 1 in Athens, Greece.
