Any ideas what I can cook with these ingredients?
My mom's out of town and I am but a poor college student low on money and there is almost no food in the house. Actually, there is a decent amount of food, but none of it cohesive. I think we have every condiment in the world. I have about a pound and a half of ground hamburger, frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts (bleh), Steak-Umms (bleh), frozen uncooked turkey burgers, frozen stir-fry vegetables, easy mac, macaroni shells, penne noodles, whole wheat spaghetti, half a jar of vodka sauce, canned artichokes, panko bread crumbs, enchilada sauce, frozen hash browns, frozen green beans, martini olives, a jar of roasted red peppers, frozen salmon fillets, peanut butter, canned tuna and salmon, brown rice, quinoa, Laughing Cow cheese wedges, two packages of cream cheese, 2 oz shredded Italian cheese blend, and about 4 oz feta. About three English muffins and a package of Zataran's Red Beans and Rice rounds out all of it. As far as staples, I have no eggs, no milk, no bread. I do have one stick of butter and some olive and cooking oils in addition to every seasoning and condiment known to man. So any ideas? More than one recipe would be awesome also...

You can make a turkey burger and serve with the english muffin. I would top with feta and roasted peppers. Use the vodka sauce, artichokes and red peppers over penne noodles. cut the chicken into strips, make the red beans and rice, add the chicken. Looks like you have many options.
3 :
1) Brown the hamburger and mix it up with the Easy Mac 2) Coat 1 chicken breast in MAYO (if you have some) dip in Panko, bake in 375 oven for 45 mins. Heat up vodka sauce, add in drained/canned artichoke. Slice up a coupld roasted red peppers and add to sauce too! Boil whole wheat pasta (boil longer than regular pasta). Drain pasta and plate. Top with pasta sauce. When chicken is done, put on plate, top with pasta sauce and shredded cheese that you have. Put in microwave for 2 mins. 3) Heat Vodka Sauce and add in 1/2 package of cream cheese until combined/melted into sauce. Serve over pasta
4 :
Zataran's with the ground beef (browned) serve with the green beans Saute the salmon fillets. Add the artichoke hearts and some of the red peppers, cooked penne and vodka sauce. top with some of the italian cheese Slice the chicken breast really thin. Saute. Remove form pan and cook the stir fry vegetable. Serve with the brown rice. If you have any bullion or stock and soy sauce add a little to make a sauce.
5 :
Man, you have a lot of food to work with. Many pasta ideas. I would cut up some chicken breasts and use the penne noodles a the canned artichokes a some of the stir fry veggies. Saute all this up and put feta cheese on top.
6 :
Thaw the frozen chicken breasts and cut into strips lengthwise. Coat with a mixture of mayo, grainy mustard and black pepper and roll in Panko crumbs. Press firmly to be sure the crumbs stick and bake in a 375F oven for 18 to 22 minutes. Dipping sauce #1: a mixture of melted orange marmalade, grainy mustard and horseradish Dipping sauce #2: mix Colman's hot mustard with cold water and let sit 10 minutes. Add mayo and honey. Tuna salad on English muffin Combine cooked pasta shells with vodka sauce and laughing cow cheese, pour into a dish and bake at 350F for 20 minutes. Stir fry veggies over brown rice Cooked ground beef and Zatarain's RB&R mix Turkey burger on English muffin and green beans

Well, you can't do much. The Turkish student must apply for the visa through the commercial application centers in Turkey [Ankara, Bursa, Gaziantap, Istanbul and Izmir] which collect the visa applications, the feels, take the biometrics and finger-prints, forward the applications to the U.K. Embassy or Consulate, and finally issue the passport (hopefully with the visa). The attached checklist shows the documents required. https://www.visainfoservices.com/ContentFiles/Documents/General%20visit%20visa.pdf .. You or your parents my assist the application in the form of an invitation letter. See attached website for details. http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/infs/inf3sponsors#Q5 ..

Is it possible for me to earn money in a situation like this...?
I am now a senior year electrical electronics engineering student in Bogazici University in Turkey and I got accepted from University of Maryland Baltimore County for Computer engineering. I have to earn money in order to continue my education. Is there any firms those need Computer Engineers to work while studying? Also is there any possibility for me to work in a consistent place? I know that legally I can work 20 hours a week. So in which place I can find a good work and earn money? I have some computer skills that's why I have chosen computer engineering... Thanks a lot for your answers...

You could join a Temp Agency down in Baltimore. I know I did that and made some decent money. I did all sorts of jobs like a receptionist or I just plugged in numbers into a spreadsheet all day. Not the most exciting but I some cash.

To fitness people-what do you eat after your workout and how long after?
I just had my protein shake and I'm thinking what to have in like an hour.. (but not sure) how long after drinking your protein shake you are supposed to eat a meal around 200 calories?? I'm thinking about havin' 1 egg, spinach and canned tuna in brine but don't feel like eating tuna. what do you usually eat? anything without meat( as i'm a student and i ate my last piece of turkey fillet last night):)! i need some ideas.

I usually get up around 5am to go for a 10k jog, I have two weight watchers biscuits just to get my metabolism going, then when I am back from the 10k I make a hot bowl of porridge. It doesnt sound very filling, but after a 10k jog it does the trick for mean and I am a big guy. Boosts my energy slowly throughout until I have a mid morning snack. So its quite a cheap option if thats what you are after too! P.S I usually sprinkle a table spoon of sweetne on top to give it a bit of taste!

Hi there Summer , i know that you are already aware that timing protein intake throughout the day is essential to maximizing muscle gains, reducing muscle breakdown, and keeping nitrogen levels positive. I will quickly summarize the logic behind the regimen before presenting the regimen itself. We need to consume whey protein no sooner than 5 minutes after the meal, and no later than 30 minutes afterwards. Here's a tip on when you are going to take proteins 00:00 Whole food meal 00:10 Whey protein shake (at least one 20-30 gram scoop) 03:00 Whole food meal 03:10 Whey protein shake
3 :
It depends on how hungry I am. If I am still hungry after my protein shake I will usually eat breakfast within 20 minutes after, but most of the time I will eat breakfast around 45 minutes after. I eat protein, complex carbs, and healthy fat. Usually I will have an omelet (2 whole eggs, 1 egg white) with fat free shredded cheese and 2 servings of oatmeal. Other times I will have scrambled egg whites, a veggie sausage patty, and 1 slice of whole wheat toast with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter.

How do medical students learn surgery in islamic countries where all dead muslims must be buried within 1 day?
How do medical students learn surgery in islamic countries where all dead muslims must be buried within 1 day?
I heard there's a rule in Islam that a dead muslim must be buried within one day. Then, my question is, how could medical students in islamic country (e.g. Iran, Turkey, Indonesia) learn about surgery without a corpse (all buried according to islamic tradition)? Please, don't insult Islam here. That's not my purpose for starting this topic.

Not everyone in an Islamic country is a Muslim you know. There are plenty of people of other faiths in those countries as well. I would imagine besides sending them (potential doctors, not cadavers) elsewhere to study, those cadavers that were donated to science would be assumed to NOT be Muslim - otherwise they wouldn't have been donated to science, they would have been buried by the family.
2 :
I'm a student in the faculty of medicine in Egypt . Here, there are people who donate their bodies for science as it is a necessary thing . and it's allowed for people to do that because studying medicine is a critical thing for saving lives . and as said in Qura'n (and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people )

Why does John McCain say America is not receiving casualties in war?
Why does John McCain say America is not receiving casualties in war?
Responding to a student who criticized his remark about our staying in Iraq for 100 years, McCain quipped, "No American argues against our military presence in Korea or Japan or Germany or Kuwait or other places, or Turkey, because America is not receiving casualties." Why did he make this mistake?

I think your reading is the problem.
2 :
he never said that
3 :
I'm not sure what he meant? That there are no casualties from the long standing bases, I suppose. I'm not sure what that has to do with a very active theater of war where we are obviously receiving casualties. He's right in that people would be more patient over Iraq were it not for the deaths, injuries and incredible monthly costs of $12B. But that's not the situation we have.
4 :
Yours is a loaded question. It assumes a fact not in evidence. He did not make any mistakes. The US has had military in Germany since WWII. No one is calling for troop removal from Germany. There is no war in Germany. Therefore, there are no war casualties in Germany. The same applies to Japan, South Korea, Kuwait... The only place where left wing liberal loonies are calling for troop withdrawal is Iraq. To my knowledge, the cowards in the US are not even calling for troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
5 :
You are in the first grade. Right?
6 :
What he actually is saying is that Americans aren't opposed to having troops stationed overseas when they are not involved in combat. There is no opposition to the overseas presence of US service members except in Iraq.

Here, read this if you can read properly. Otherwise go back to school. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/02/14/mccain.king/index.html

Can it be that he is an idiot? That's my take.
9 :
I guess it's another misspoken mistake. Mistakenly misunderstood.
10 :
because he is keeping his eyes closed..his mind is closed to only what he believes..yo regerugg... we should have more troops in Afghanistan.. that's where 9/11 originated.. 9/11 came out of Afghanistan.. whats wrong with you people.. Iraq is about oil.. our priorities should be to get osama bin laden.. Saddam is dead...9/11 is not about iraq.. this whole thing started with the planes flying into 2 buildings killing thousands.. OSAMA BINLADEN!!!!!!!! no one from IRAQ!!!!!!!
11 :
It appears the only mistake here is your reading comprehension skills.
12 :
He did not, he mean USA is OK with occupying other countries as long is no USA dieing.
13 :
HE SIMPLY STATED THAT THOSE WHO ARE CLAMORING FOR US TO GET OUT OF IRAQ NOW DOES NOT SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM BECAUSE WE MAINTAIN BASES IN KOREA, GERMANY, JAPAN AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD! LISTEN HE DID NO SAID WE ARE NO RECEIVING CASUALTIES. PERHAPS I SHOULD ALSO SAID THAT PERSONALLY DID NO HEAR WHAT HE SAID BUT JUDGING BY WHAT YOU WROTE THAT IS WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO EXPLAIN
14 :
Maybe he was just up from a nap?
15 :
In response to the statement by an answerer that no one has said troops should leave Germany as well as Iraq the first statement is false there was a book called The Military Assault on The Environment written by William Thomas which talked about the damage U.S. military excercises and military waste did to Germany and of the damage N.A.T.O. excercises did. There would be a call to remove troops but if German Environmentalists had said the troops should leave they would either have been called Communists at the time or people would ignore them like they do today. There were casulties in Kuwait during The Gulf War. The current casulties are in Afghanistan and Iraq though. Mcain does not appear to care about dead Iraqis not in volved in fighting. The strange thing is that even when people who are not fighting U.S. Forces they might face arrest, torture ,and demands they devulge the location of terrrorist cells and such.

He didn't. You need to check your facts. You are probably just a fem-nazi hating american.

What are the basic sentences in dutch?
A dutch student is going to come us (I live in Turkey) after a month to stay four days and I want to learn basic things about the language and people. Could you write basic sentences in dutch like Hi, what is your name, my name is ...., how are you, How old are you etc. And what do dutch people like to do? Also it would be great if you write the numbers till 10.

Hello - Hallo / Hoi What is your name? - Hoe heet je? My name is.. - Mijn naam is.. / Ik heet.. How are you? - Hoe is het? How old are you? - Hoe oud ben je? How was your trip? - Hoe was je reis? This is my home/house - Hier woon ik/ dit is mijn huis Yes - Ja No - Nee 1 - een 2 - twee 3 - drie 4 - vier 5 - vijf 6 - zes 7 - zeven 8 - acht 9 - negen 10 - tien Dutch people, like Turkish people, like to do many different things. But maybe, because there is a lot of water here, Dutch people mostly like to swim or sail.. As long as it is 'gezellig' ( this is a special Dutch word for when you really enjoy the company of others around you) it will be fine. Good luck ;)

Admission of foreigner studying at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey?
Hi! I'm from South Africa, really want to study at Bogazici Uni! I understand the system of scoring points on SAT or YOS but am wondering what the 'general feeling' of accepting foreign (specifically not from USA or Europe) undergrad students? Can someone shed some light? Thanks :)

Do I have a chance of getting in to Boğaziçi University as an international student?
Do I have a chance of getting in to Boğaziçi University as an international student?
Merhaba :) So I was originally going to retire in Turkey, but I realized I want to enjoy this amazing place while I am still young :P For that reason I have been thinking about alternatives. I would absolutely love to go to college in Istanbul. It would be amazing to spend that much time there, and I feel it would really round out my education to go to school in another country. Sekiz aydan beri Türkçe öğreniyorum ama Türkçem çok iyi değil. The good news is, Boğaziçi University's programs are in English (of course, I will make every attempt to learn Turkish while I am there, but I could never speak it well enough to make it into a college course where Turkish is the language of instruction). I heard that it is really difficult to get into, as it is one of the top universities in Istanbul. On top of that, I would be an international student. I want to apply for the master's program in economics. I have a bachelor's degree in economics and I am completing my master's degree in public administration, both at schools here in the U.S. My grade point average for my econ degree is 3.5 (out of 4.0), and my master's degree grade point average will probably be close to that. The universities are not top schools here, but decent (ranked Tier 3 by US News and World Report rankings) Do you think I have a chance to get into Boğaziçi University? What kind of competition would I be up against? Sorry for the long question! Teşekkürler :) Also, they accept the GRE exam. That exam is really hard for me, so I would probably just barely make the cutoff for Boğaziçi University's GRE requirements (I think it was like 670).

How can I lower my grocery bill as a college student?
How can I lower my grocery bill as a college student?
Right, so I just spent almost $70 on groceries (mostly for myself) at Publix (a local grocery store). Yikes. I'm going to provide a list of what I bought... let me know how I can save some money next time. I am expecting this to last 3 weeks to a month (of course some basics will last longer than that). I bought generic brands when available and cheaper (some name brands were on sale). Was this an alright trip? I work a lot and I'm a college student, so time is limited. I am not an experienced grocery shopper really... I hunt for bargains and sales... but I just moved into my new apartment and my roomates had some basics, but I had to start from scratch. I always check the "per oz" cost on the grocery store tag, but any other tips are greatly appreciated. Some easy ways to do more sale shopping would be great! 1 bag frozen Tortellini Frozen Broccoli Frozen Mushrooms *1 Bag Banquet Chicken Nuggets *1 Bag Chicken Tenders (^They were buy one, get one free) Cottage Cheese 6 Pack Bagels Fresh Spinach Salad Mix Bag of Shredded Cheese Baby Carrots Feta Cheese Seafood Spread French Onion Dip Coffee Creamer Cream Cheese Turkey Polish Sausage Gallon of Green Tea Gallon of Milk Crackers 100 Snack Pack (Variety Box) Box of Kettle Corn Generic Brand Cheerios Tortilla Chips Jar of Pasta Sauce Garlic Powder Drinking water (the kind that goes in the fridge and has a spout) Mini Rice Cakes A Dozen Eggs Oh, please keep in mind that I try to eat healthy. Everything I buy is a lower fat or lower calorie option. This time my "non-healthy" item was the chicken because it was fast, easy, cheap... and not the WORST thing for me. Cheese is expensive, but dairy is part of a well-balanced diet. I mix it with eggs, salads, etc etc. I'd love to be able to cut it out, but I also don't want to be lacking nutrition. I'm the only one eating the veggies, so I try not to buy fresh. It's cheaper to buy the frozen... and it doesn't go to waste. Instead of spending $4 on fresh veggies and half of it goes to waste, I spend the $1-$1.50 and it all gets eaten. Thanks for the tips so far. A lot of them are helpful. There were a couple buys like the tea, pasta sauce and snack packs that were just easy, and on sale. I try to limit those. A Ramen... my best friend. We have a HUGE package of it, but I try to limit my consumption of it. It's LOADED with fat and sodium... gross. I try to make my own "sauce" for it, but it's hard to get a good sauce, low in sodium.

When I was a starving college student I found Ramon Noodles, and fresh veggies, Sandwiches, and fruit were the best way to save money. Just cut all the veggies and fruit yourself and make meals out of them.
2 :
eat less

hmm sales and bargains are always better. i think that if you buy a salad mix than you dont need to have cheese. the thing you want to try is not buy the salad mix because you can easily make a salad with the spinach you buy. and try to reduce the number of cheeses. you might want to visit some asian or a country specialised shop where you can buy a lot of nutriotous food at low cost and also try a different taste. and instead of bagels try the whole wheat bread. and also choose either the rice cakes or the crakcers.
4 :
ok.... check back on my answr frequently cuz i am sure i will think of more ideas..... instead of buying bagged foods such as shredded cheese, tortellini, baby, carrots, broccoli, jar sauce... try this buy the generic block of chz and shred it yourself, you can buy one at the dollar store buy a can of crushed tomatoes and doctor it yourself with garlic, onion, salt, pepper parsley instead of buying green tea already made, try brewing your own, instead of bagels, buy whole wheat or whole grain bread, it freezes well buy whole carrots, and clean and cut them up, buy fresh broccoli and steam it instead of tortellini, buy pasta , boil it and add ricoota cheese to your homemade sauce... its yummy ramen noodles make a huge pot of chili or a soup on your day off, you can eat it everyday, so it cost you 20 bucks to make a pot of chili, you can eat it everyday or freeze it in containers enough for a meal at a time.....i made a pot of cabbage and beef soup.... wheat pasta was just on sale at publix, buy 1 get 1...... you can get used to it, lord knows i did.... instead of kettle korn, buy a bag of raw popcorn and pickup a cheap popcorn maker for 10 bucks and pop your own... instead of your snack packs, buy a huge tub of sherbert and eat that when you get the munchies..... buy publix brand crackers, they have thier version of almost all the cracker brands, the woven wheats are my fave, (the publix brand of triscuits) if you have a fruit stand nearby you can get alot of your fresh produce super cheap that way.... i bought a case of tomatoes for 12 bucks, that 40 lbs of tomatoes.....
5 :
I was going to say to not buy processed and prepared foods, but it looks like you don't anyway. All the more you can do is try to always buy the store brand and try to buy whatever is on special. Let the specials dictate your menus.
6 :
You already sound like you have some good strategies with keeping an eye out for sales and buying generic. You may also try clipping coupons or buying a membership to a wholesale warehouse like Costco or Sam's Club. You can get a friend or a group of friends to split the yearly fee (around $40 or so) and take them shopping with you. This way you and your friends buy in bulk which is much cheaper than retail in the long run.
7 :
Cottage Cheese - you can make it by yourself Salad Mix - by lettice and make it by yourself Bag of Shredded Cheese - shreded cheese more pricy (buy cheese in bricks and shred by youself) Gallon of Green Tea - make it by yourself and keep at the freege Also - use coupons (try to shop at the stores accepting double coupons)
8 :
I'd say you did pretty well, but I'll put my two cents in: Don't know what the tortillini cost but dried pasta is really inexpensive. Salad mix - I find that heads of lettuce are cheaper and go further Shredded cheese- buy a grater(@ a thrift store) and buy blocks of cheese Baby carrots-I find that carrots are cheaper by the pound than in pkgs. Buy tea bags and make your own tea snack packs - is that chips? if so, buy big bags and baggies Lastly- bottled water is usually cheaper by the gallon, and you could save the jugs and refill at many stores. Oh yeah, I know it sounds nerdy, but have you thought of coupons? I save almost half of my bill using them. Good luck- hope this helps
9 :
Just buy what you NEED, you shouldn't spend so much money on food you don't need.

College Student Seeking Advice About Losing Weight?
College Student Seeking Advice About Losing Weight?
I am 5'2 1/2 and I am currently 135. On June 18th I was 150 and I started to go on a diet which consisted of veggies and lean meat (turkey). I had approximately 200 calories of veggies (8 servings) and 450 calories of turkey (3 packets of turkey meat) a day. I ate 650 calories a day for a month and lost 15lbs. Since then, I added special K red berries to my diet. Its been about a week and a half and I have not lost a single pound! Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I excercise a lot too. I do 40 mins on an elliptical (500 cals), then 35 mins on another elliptical (300), then 60 mins of fast walking (300). So I am burning 1100 cals a day and only taking in 750 a day. I should be losing weight right? Any tips for me to lose weight. I really really wanted to be down to 120 by the time school starts in late sept.

There is a point in which your body will sloooowwwllly loose the remaining weight. Just keep doing what you are doing and you will start to loose again.
2 :
Oh, dear! Your body is going in to starvation mode. Your body thinks there is a famine going on and has adjusted your metabolism to put you into survival mode. You are overdoing everything in your rush to take the pounds off too quickly. Sure you would like to start out the year being a "new" you on campus. It is not worth risking your health. You can have that weight off safely by winter break or Valentines day at the latest. Up your calories to around, 1200 so that your body can adjust to a healthy intake.... (When you calculated your calories you neglected to take into account the calories you burn while sleeping, eating, resting, etc.) The amount of calories you burn varies with age, weight, intensity of exercise and the amount of food ingested. You have made some mistakes that all "dieters" tend to make. It took me months to get my metabolism back on track after a crash diet. I have learned not to restrict my calories. I have learned to keep close tabs on my exercise levels too. Add exercise time slowly and intensity slowly. Take a vacation from exercise every now and then. Vary your exercise program so you get positive returns. Speaking of variety. While your food intake is moderately healthy you are not giving your self enough variety. Add some fish and real fruit. You also need some whole grains.

New Jersey is a big place.. going from the northern end to the southern end can take 2 hours or more... i would suggest looking at the commercial websites such as expedia.com or hotels.com to get the best rates

Can I afford to be and exchange student, and where should go, what program should I use?
Can I afford to be and exchange student, and where should go, what program should I use?
I really want to be an exchange student. I'm pretty sure you got that from the title, but I don't have money. I really wanted to go fall '09, but that is just not going to be possible, so I'm thinking fall 2010. Only BIG problem is money. My sister is going to college next year (yaaayyaaaaaaa) and that is going to break the bank as it is. I really want this though, I've tried everything to get money but I'm having trouble. Anyway, to sum this up, I need three things: What program? (I've looked at AFS and YFU and like them both)(One with a lot of scholorship oppotunities!!) Where should I go? (I like the Netherlands and Turkey a lot.) How do I get MONEY?!!!!! Thank you!!! Any help would be GREAT!!

You should try the rotary club. There is usually one in every city, and if not then there should be one within driving distance. The rotary club is by far the safest and cheapest option, i know that that sounds like a contridiction haha. Instead of just anyone applying to be a host family, they only take people who are part of the club. To be in the club, these people must be business owners or influential people which means that most of them are wealthy. One girl, in Argentina, is currently staying with the President of Argentina! A girl from another company is staying with us, and when interviewed the woman told us the girls needs didnt matter and that we shouldnt base our decisions on her. Im glad the rotary club does a better job than that! To be an exchange student though, you dont have to be in the club, you just need to apply and go to some meetings where you will meet inbounds (current exchange students) and outbounds (people going next year). Its also really good because of the cost. It cost about as much as a flight ticket (which is inlcuded) and insurance and your host club will give you about $100 a month. You dont have to speak the language to apply, but its good to learn before you leave. They also offer ALOT of countries. Pretty much everything in south america, europe, scandanavia, asia, and india and south africa. Next year im going to iceland and im sure its going to be the best expierince of my life. I know i couldnt have done it without the rotary club. I hope you have as good of luck as i did. sorry for typing so much haha -Erin, 15 p.s. they also offer scholarships if you need them :)

Are you sure about Turkey??? Be really sure!!! I have a friend whose son was in Turkey last year on a University exchange. He was supposed to be there the whole year...he came home at semester...he was pretty freaked! War and all that! I think Turkey would be tough for a lot of Westerners...I would suggest going with Netherlands. Money? I don't know...my parents wouldn't let me go in hs, because of money...I think it was better in University, anyway, because I had more freedom and got to do my OWN thing... AFS and YFU are possibly the top two programs in the country...go with that thought. Go with your eyes wide open...know what you are getting yourself into, and you will have the time of your life!
3 :
You sound like you've done a lot of research. That is good. AFS does have a lot of scholarships...I think there is even one to Turkey. YFU is good too, and so is Rotary. Money? Well I would try getting a job and fundraising! http://www.cultures-shocked.org/Joomla/forum/index.php?

I don't know how you become an au pair but if I were you, I would be careful. You never know.
2 :
Probably they genuinely want you in order to teach English with American accent for the little girl. However, do you speak Turkish? Do you think you will be happy in a country, however westernised has deep Islamic routs? I lived in Turkey for 1 year and until now from all the countries I lived in (Lebanon was my fave), Turkey is the least I liked and had most awful experiences however careful I was to avoid them. Is the only country I could not return to visit. Check for pics of short movies about Turkey on the net, youtube.com etc. Some of them are very eye opening.
3 :
i didn't know what the heck was an au pair before i looked it up ^^ anyways, if you made up your mind about moving to Turkey and continuing your education here; then being an "au pair" in fact seems like a pretty good idea, given that you make sure everything about this person seems ok beforehand. where does this woman live in Turkey? the location where she lives could change your experience more than you could imagine. other than that the info you gave about her sounds actually very nice and if true, you should have nothing to worry about. how bout this, maybe you could come along with a friend (preferably a guy if you will) for the first couple of weeks to feel safer and then when you believe there's nothing to worry about, your friend could turn back. good luck!
4 :
londonsth, you question the happiness in turkey because "however westernised has deep Islamic routs" and lebanon is your fav country? it's a beautiful country for sure, but there's discrepancy. LOL are you the jewish troll who just came to this section? do you know what you're talking about well nobody is expecting you to return. we would be happier if the tourist crowd (esp the useless ones) would be less in number (30 million ppl each year,i started to hate touristic towns) there are already many americans and europeans living here, esp istanbul. she could find from them. idk sounds weird. check the website of her school if they have a teacher's page. call her on the phone. but i would be suspicous about such an invitation. anyway depends on how much you know her and how you met. so i cant say anything. at first you may come with your family or another friend. you may come alone too, if you trust.

The best thing you can do is contact American Consulate in Istanbul. They would probably make a background check for you. http://istanbul.usconsulate.gov/

get some chicken quaters and season them well with garlic, rosmary and black pepper. then heat a skillet or pan up with some olive oil or whatever oil you have and sear them on both sides until they have a carmel color to them. then put them in a pot of chicken broth and one onion cut up and simmer for two to three hours. after that serve them over white rice and some bootleg wine and youve fot yourself a five meal! i make this all the time when im broke and my boyfriend loves it. the meat is so tender it falls off the bone and you ca get it for like 79 cents a pound

unfortunalty poor doesnt give you much options. try growing some of your own veggies! Take your vitimans maintan balance Buy and Cook in bulk, freeze left-overs in portion sized containers. and pick from them. believe it or not this is cheaper. these websites are good reasorces: http://www.shape.com/healthy_eating http://www.mnsu.edu/shs/healtheducation/bmc/

Dont listen to EnvyMe white bread passes through you like a hot knife through butter you wont be full off it for an hour. Lol your doing pretty good i think

Being a poor college student myself, I find that it's better to start with where you shop first. In my college town (Chapel Hill), it's usually the food lions that have the cheapest prices on food. I can usually get a lot of healthy groceries with only $30. I usually get a lot of grains if I want to be full throughout the day (oatmeal as you mentioned, rice, pasta, etc). They're high in fiber and can be mixed with a lot of cheap veggies to make for a healthier meal (pasta salad with cucumbers, beef and broccoli with rice, etc). The hardest thing for me, it seems, is having the time (or the will ;) to prepare all that healthy stuff.
8 :
well good for you for cooking at home! it's much cheaper than fast food and other restaurants! know that casseroles are cheap, easy to make, and last a looong time. You can make a HUGE pot of whatever casserole..eat some for a day or 2 and put the rest in plastic containers in the freezer. Take them out later to microwave and they will taste just as good as when you first cooked it! Spaghetti's is cheap and can be frozen nicely. Homemade soups also. Know that tomato based foods freeze easily, like spaghetti's and lasagna. Dishes with milk in..don't freeze too well in my opinion, like chicken pot pie (there's milk in the sauce). But those dishes can be put in the fridge for several days. Just think of how you can cook a meal for low money and have lots of leftovers left. type in "cheap recipes" in google and a bunch will come up. www.campbellkitchen.com has great receipes too for low cost.
9 :
hey your breakfast is great and pretty balanced, I think! that's the most important part. you should probably add in a couple of snack times to hold you over too. How about beans and nuts? Unsalted peanuts still in the shell can be inexpensive. Tuna is great for cheap and healthy too. Cottage cheese is high protein/low fat if you can find it on sale. If you are able to save up and buy your food in bulk, whey powder is the cheapest source of protein. Seriously! $70 for a 10lbs bag lasting 4 months. I add it and a little wheat germ to smoothies and voila! stay hydrated and get in the protein, healthy oils, fiber, fruit and dairy (2 % milk) all rolled into one. You are on the right track, it seems. Eating healthy on a college budget can be SUCH a challenge. Keep up the good work!
10 :
Get yourself some Hormel Chili. Add one half of a cup of water. Stir and bring to a boil. Add 1 cup of rice and cover, remove from heat. In about 5 minutes you will have a hearty Chili with rice main dish. Serve on warm flour tortillas (heat in microwave for 1 minute on high). Fix just as you would a taco...sour cream, shredded cheese, tomatoes/salsa...whatever floats your boat. Cut up some celery and carrots (the big ones, not the little baby carrots..they're expensive). Eat with Ranch Dressing as a side.
11 :
Hi, I find canned beans are cheap and a great bang for your buck. I really like chick peas. I add some lemon juice and olive oil, and jazz it up with onions if I have them. Canned beans....not pork and beans, or the ones with tomato sauce in it...however if you like that kind of stuff its ok. They are great protein, vitamins, fibre and they really sustain you until your next meal. There is a whole variety out there. You can add them to salad, or mix them and make a salad. You can add them to broth with a few noodles for a soup. You can puree them and they are a spread or dip. Celery, carrots, are pretty cheap too. Sometimes buying the frozen kind is actually cheaper, and all the work is done for you. Eggs- make an omlette / frittata for dinner. Saute some potatoes onions, you can even put hot dogs in there. Cheese too. add your eggs. Make a bigger batch, you can use the rest for lunch or breakfast the next day. family size ground beef. usually is at a better price. I pre pack it into freezer bags , small ones. Portion size, then I freeze it. That is a cheap meal with some beans, noodles or rice. I hope this helps. Good luck Happy Cooking
12 :
Use recipes with more rice, couscous, pastas, and frozen veggies. These are more filling. Buy frozen fruits to snack on. Frozen is always cheaper. Omit the hot dogs and fatty condiments. Start coupon clipping. You can save so much money in the least likely areas.

been there dude, In college, I tried the fast food route (buying the cheapest things on the menu) and I became sick of it after a few months. Here are some good, cheap recipe's for you.... *Baked fish I recommend kroger: buy fresh fish that has been packaged (usually 3 or 4 dollars a package can get you fillets for 1 or two meals) It can be any kind, tilapia, catfish, salmon, halibut, mahi=mahi, etc...If you buy the ones which have been packaged for a few days, they will still taste fresh, just cook them within a couple of days. ***With any of the fish, I like to marinate them with lemon juice, lemon & pepper seasoning, or whatever seasoning you have.cilantro gives it a good splash of flavor too... ***bake the fish @ 390 degrees for about 30 min.... ***Throw some tater tots at the same time, and you've got a meal -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***buy a frozen bag of already cooked chicken breasts. ***sprinkle lemon juice on it, or water, and microwave about 1 min on high on each side ***cut chicken and place it on top of lettuce leaves for a nice salad, buy some michelina microwave fettucinni for a buck fifty, and you've got chicken fettuccini. Buy a box of buttered garlic toast and use it with a toaster on medium, and you've got a great italian meal. ***You can also put the chicken breast on bread for a nice sandwich----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***In summer, or when you're eating light, buy a couple of packs of deli meat (pre-packaged is much cheeper and economical) Buy two different kinds )maybe oven roasted chicken, ham, turkey) and already cooked bacon, and cheese slices.... ***You can make different combos of sandwiches... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***Eckeridge farm sells nice sausages that you can just put some water on and microwave, or simmer on the stove for about 8-10 minutes, and thats a meal too ______________________________________________________ wolf brand chili, fritos, and mild cheddar, salsa make a good chili pie ____________________________________________ ***buy raw chicken drum sticks (Try kroger type store: 16 drumsticks for under $4! ***put half the chicken in a freezer bag, use at least 8 ***wash and pat dry ***marinate with lemon, seasoning, or olive oil ***bake between 375- 390 degrees for about 1 hr uncovered in a glass dish.... ***Eating two drumsticks with a side like chips, canned veggies, etc. will give you 4 meals.... ******Fish and chicken will give you great protein, and it will give you the energy and nutrients you need to stay focused on your studies...Also, its healthier and cheaper than fast food in the long run... ***A foreman grill is great because you can cook burger patties whenever you want, quickly, and the patties can be had on the cheap as well....

You need to add more fruit and veggies to your diet. Go for the fruits and veggies that are in season. They're often cheaper that way. These foods are in season: Broccoli watermelon oranges spinach strawberries When these foods are too expensive you can get some of them frozen. It's cheaper this way. Your breakfast sounds good. Just make sure you're eating fresh strawberries, natural oatmeal with low sugar, and don't use too much oil when cooking your eggs. You can even replace those eggs with nuts sometimes... almonds are good but peanuts or a cheaper alternative. Plus try adding fish to your lunch. A medium sized piece of fish has way more protein than a hotdog and about the same amount of calories. Ground turkey is good for you and cheap too. Just use it for everything you use meat for, burgers, spaghetti (whole wheat pasta and bread), ect. I always read food labels to know what's in the food I'm eating. That helps me find food that will benefit me the most. I hope all of this helps you.=)
15 :
Ramen noodles, canned tuna in water, pastas all shapes, spaghetti noodles and tomato sauce, If you can take it T.V. dinners. Where I live they come on sale for $0.87. When you are going to cook any kind of meat make sure you cook to serve an army. This way you can freeze individual servings in zip lock bags.
16 :
eat black beans and long grain brown rice with brocoli and/or cauliflower, red onions, whole wheat bread, and plain yogurt
17 :
I am a very good cook since I was a kid, I am also very frugal - read= cheap. Buy what is on sale and read the ads. If you have a place where you can buy bulk, stock up on rice, pasta, spuds, Seasonal veggies are usually a good buy. Here in CA I bought 5 ears of corn for .87 Whole chickens are 78 cents a pound, cook one of these and eat for days, Sandwiches, soup etc. Carrots, celery and onions are usually cheep and the base of many meals. Shop ethnic markets and farmers markets for good buys. They don't want to lug that stuff back home so go late in the day and bargain. When I first met my husband, I could take $5 and buy a chicken, a sack of potatoes and a bag of corn w/ stick of butter and we could eat that for 3-4 days. That was in the 80's, but I think I could still pull it off for less than $10
18 :
you might wanna substitute one of your meals with a cheaper source of protein like egg white. lentils. or brown rice. getting to you're daily diet here's a grocery list that might help you stay well fed on a budget. -powder/long life milk <-- it's cheaper and most brands are fortified. -eggs. <--use the white for leaner protein. -brown rice. <--good source of vitamin A.B and fibre. -white rice <-- a cheap substitute to potatoes that is rich in vitamin B. -yellow lentils. <-- high in iron and good for soups. -black lentils, <-- rich in iron and a good source of protein. good with rice or stir fried with onions and peas. -wheat or rye bread,<-- buy them in larger portions than you usually do and than freeze them. thawing just what you're going to eat that day. it'll stay fresh for up to 8 weeks and will save you on both bread and gas for the trips. -steal cut oats.<-- look for a cheaper brand you can buy in bulk. -fresh fruits and veggies. <--if you freeze your own. you'll save allot more money.
19 :
One of my favorites to eat and its cheap and good for you, too. 1 can spicy Black Beans, stewed mexican tomatoes (with the spices in it) 2 cups cooked brown rice (Uncle Bens Microwave in 90 seconds is good) and 1/2 to 1 tsp garlic powder. Mix and heat up (in the microwave) the black beans, cut up stewed tomatoes (into smaller pieces) and garlic powder. Cook the rice. Mix or pour bean mixture over the top. I like to mix it together. If you have it, can add ground chilies to make it extra spicy.

you might wanna substitute one of your meals with a cheaper source of protein like egg white. lentils. or brown rice. getting to you're daily diet here's a grocery list that might help you stay well fed on a budget.

If you have it, can add ground chilies to make it extra spicy.

sorry for you, that's bad... Vietnam: Ordinary passport holders are required to have visa to enter Turkey. Official passport holders are exempt from visa for their travels up to 90 days. Germany: Ordinary and official passport holders are exempt from visa for their travels up to 90 days. btw germans dont take any visa before coming or at the airport. it writes different for the visa at the airport. for ex: Belgium: Ordinary passport holders are required to have visa to enter Turkey. They can obtain three-month multiple entry visas at the Turkish border gates. Official passport holders are exempt from visa for their travels up to 90 days. I think your passport and nationality is important. so resident permit may not help. schengen rules dont apply here.. apply the consulate as soon as possible, tell your concern, maybe they speed up the process. ** I can only think of coming from the greek islands that you may enter without a visa. but i know very little, for more information you may ask the question in greece section. she's not illegal immigrant, she says she has a student visa. but the resident permit thing is complicated... no idea... i dont think resident permit would help, since it only writes " passport holders" which is related to your nationality. you can travel in schengen area with your german student visa. in turkey schengen rules dont apply, yet visa regimes to schengen countries are different for each, look at germany- belgium example. i wish you good luck, go and immediately tell your concern. maybe they can give a visa quickly. my friend got a visa for travel in france in 3 days without interview, i hope turkish consulate is the same in speed.... 6-8 weeks is too late!!!

Sorry, but you can't travel since you will not get a visa within the next 6 to 8 weeks! Citizens of Vietnam need a visa for Turkey. http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa .. Must I obtain a student visa if I study abroad in Greece for more than 90 days or can it be avoided?
Must I obtain a student visa if I study abroad in Greece for more than 90 days or can it be avoided?
The policy for student visas in Greece is that if you are in the country for more than 90 days you must obtain a visa. However, I am planning on being there for 4 months and during that time I'd like to travel to Egypt, Turkey, and Italy (EU). Can I go to an EU or Non EU country and get my passport stamped during that time to avoid paying $500 for a visa? Because technically I am not in Greece for a duration longer than 90 days. Is there anyone who is more educated on the subject or knows for sure?

The 90 days duration is (a) the max amount of days allowed on a Schengen visa or (b) the max amount of days that certain nationalities can travel freely within the Schengen zone without a visa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_visa#Schengen_visa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_Waiver_Program However firstly, Greece is not part of the Visa Waiver program anyway, and even both this and the Schengen visa, is for tourist travel only. As a student enrolling officially then you would have a different immigration status and would no longer be a "tourist". Therefore neither the Schengen visa or Visa Waiver program would be applicable Getting a stamp from a non-Schengen zone country does not "re-start" the 90 days (that is an urban myth perpetuated and one that people still fall foul of). You must be outside of the Schengen zone for a further 90 days to be eligable for entry again with the visa waiver program anyway. So if you have a Schengen visa then this will not be issued for more than 90 days and a lot of questions will be asked if you apply for two visa's in short succession. Also you may be require to show proof of being a tourist if this is what you have declared on the applicatioin (e.g. hotel bills etc) Therefore you are better off being honest and paying the $500 if you want to study in Greece. The fine (and subsequent ban on re-entry) if caught would likely be more than €500 from what I have read about this subject.

Official US Embassy report : The U.S. Government remains deeply concerned about the heightened threat of terrorist attacks against U.S. citizens and interests abroad. Like other countries that are members of the Schengen Agreement for free cross-border movement, Greece’s open borders with its European neighbors allow the possibility of terrorist groups entering/exiting the country with anonymity. As the first entry point into Schengen from points south and east, Greece’s long coastline and many islands also heighten the possibility that foreign-based terrorists might try to exploit Greece’s borders. Domestic terrorist organizations such as Revolutionary Struggle and “Sect of Revolutionaries†have become increasingly active against both domestic and foreign targets in Greece. Recent attacks and attempted attacks have included the use of Molotov cocktails (gasoline bombs), small arms and rifle fire, and improvised explosive devices, the largest being a 50-kilo car bomb which failed to detonate before the police arrived. The Greek police forces, other Greek governmental agencies, private American and Greek businesses, and the United States Embassy have been attacked in the last three years. Recent actions indicate that the perpetrators are indiscriminate. The risk of “being in the wrong place at the wrong time†in the event of a terrorist action is a concern for residents and visitors. U.S. tourists or residents in Greece should remain vigilant, exercise caution, and monitor local developments. Some current terrorist organizations are aligned with the ideology of the older Marxist terrorist group November 17 (N17) which targeted Greek businessmen and officials, as well as officials from NATO countries in Greece, from the mid-1970s until the early part of this decade. N17 terrorists murdered 23 people, including five U.S. Government employees. Strikes and demonstrations are a regular occurrence. Greece is a stable democracy and these activities for the most part are orderly and lawful. However, a wave of incidents started when a teenager was shot and killed in an encounter with the police in December 2008. Incidents occurred throughout Greece, but the primary sources of violence were in Athens and Thessaloniki, Protestors there engaged in violent confrontations with the police and carried out destructive vandalism and rioting in localized areas, some of which are areas frequented by tourists, injuring numerous police officers. Riot control procedures often include the use of tear gas. Visitors should keep abreast of news about demonstrations from local news sources and hotel security. When there are demonstrations, visitors should be aware of and avoid places where demonstrators frequently congregate, such as the Polytechnic University area, Exarchia, Omonia, and Syntagma Squares in Athens, and Aristotle Square in Thessaloniki. The Omonia and Exharchia areas of Athens are at particular risk for crime and politically-motivated violence; U.S. Embassy personnel and their families have been urged strongly to avoid these areas between 9 pm and dawn.

Foreign Exchange Student - What Country?
Foreign Exchange Student - What Country?
Tl;wr (Too long; won't read) What country should I go on for my exchange? _________________________________________________ Hey there, I plan on being a foreign exchange student my senior year of high school through the Rotary's Youth Exchange program. I haven't been accepted ... yet, because they do that in December, but I have though about which country I want to go to but would like some input :) These are the countries I am able to choose from: Africa Exchange Programs * South Africa Asia Exchange Programs * India * Japan * Russia * South Korea * Taiwan * Thailand Australia Exchange Programs * New Zealand Europe Exchange Programs * Austria * Belgium * Czech Republic * Denmark * Finland * France * Germany * Italy * Latvia * Lithuania * Norway * Poland * Slovakia * Spain * Sweden * Switzerland * Turkey North America Exchange Programs * Mexico South America Exchange Programs * Argentina * Brazil * Chile * Ecuador So far my top 3 choices are Norway, South Korea, and Russia. I want Norway because I heard it is a magnificent and beautiful place to be, and I am part Norwegian, but ... my main reason for going on this exchange is to learn a new language, and Norwegian isn't really useful in the USA or for that matter, anywhere but Norway! I also wanted South Korea because I've studied the language some, and my good friend is Korean and she's taught me some. The language is a great one to know because of business, and Korea's economy is strong; they also do a lot of trading with the USA. And... Russia? I'm not sure. The language seems pretty cool, but I'm not too sure about the country? So, what country do you think I should go to?! Give me good reason! :) (and preferably pick between my top 3, but if you see a different country that is awesome, list some reasons why and I might have a change of heart!) Thanks for everything! ... & reading this. :P P.S. The only country in which there is a language requirement is France, which is 3 years.

Well, if you are looking for a country for the language and business, go to India. There are tons of indians in the US now and also we do a TON of business with them, besides the fact that we also outsource to india A LOT. You'd be a head of people here if you learned hindi and about the indian culture in general. but...sure south Korea sounds nice?
2 :
go to Sweden!
3 :
The only problem with just picking any old country (I'm not sure about this program either personally as I never researched it) is that there might be language requirements. If that's the case, then that severely limits where you can go. Make sure that you have the language requirement (if there is one) for these countries before you set your heart on them.
4 :
Well my pick would definitely be Korea, amazing country, completely different culture so it's a cool experience plus Korea is fun and Koreans are cool and outgoing plus you can learn Korean easily as you already know some of it. Also, Koreans like americans (probably only country, lol). But dude, you can't except that once you speak a second language you can become some international business man, language really isn't everything. Millions of Koreans speak english and they are just regular people. And you're also wrong about Norwegian. Swedish and Danish are almost the same languages so you can speak there Norwegian too and people will understand, plus most people in Norway speak good English. Climate isn't exactly pleasant in Norway either and it's like dark and depressing for most of the time. And dude, you don't want to go to Russia. Not only the language will kill you, plus nobody there speaks English, maybe except a some young people but that's about it. Also, Russians are not exactly used to foreigners and I think that at some point you might not feel welcome in Russia. Plus it's not exactly rich country, if that matters to you. So yeah, I would probably go to South Korea, my second choice would be Italy (awesome people, good food, lot of nightlife and fun). When I was your age I went to Australia (to learn English). I'm European - not from any country I mentioned. PS: don't listen to the chick who talks about india. India has probably more english speakers than united states, so even if you by some miracle learned the language you're never gonna use it, maybe not even in india.

College Student Budget Help!?
College Student Budget Help!?
For the first time ever I am going to be paying my rent and I need some financial/budget help/advice. I'm a poor college student. Here's my situation: I get paid bi-weekly (every other week) around $300. My expenses: $350 per month rent $100-120 every other week in groceries $30 medication per month I want to be able to save money in my savings account -wedding next year so I want to add to my savings & have $30 recreation money per paycheck, still be able to eat, get medicine, and pay rent. How do I do this? I've been thinking out a million and one different ways, but each seems too stressful, like there must be an easier option. I want to cut my grocery bill down. My fiancee and I are sticking to the outer edges of the store, keeping away from processed foods, expensive meat cuts, etc. We aren't vegetarians, we eat pretty much anything - I'm thinking about cutting our grocery bill down to just ground turkey, frozen vegetables, bananas, milk, and loads of rice & pasta.

Consider buying dried beans and peas (legumes) as a cheap source of protein. These can be cooked in a crockpot and left while you are in school. If you don't have a crockpot, simmer them on the stove when you are home studying. Lentils cook the fastest, in 30-60 minutes, for those times you are in a hurry. Also, this may sound gross, but there are lots of perfectly good and plastic-sealed foods thrown out daily by grocery stores. Check the dumpsters nightly for all kinds of baked goods, fresh vegetables, and packaged foods that are perfectly good to eat. "Freegans" do this all the time - they were recently featured on Oprah's show.

You might try finding a better on-campus job. With your income, you probably qualify for grant assistance, so be sure to fill-out a FAFSA (see link) to see if you qualify for state or federal grants. You may not be interested in taking on any debt, but a student loan could be a good answer for you. If you qualify for a subsidized loan, you will have no interest accrual or payments until six months after you cease being enrolled on a full-time basis. You should take the maximum loan you can, in this case, invest it in a safe place at a decent rate of return. The ING Orange Savings Account is a good place (see link), or I could recommend other things to you offline. Once you graduate, pay-off the loans in full from the savings or investment account, and keep the interest as your reward for being smart with the government's money. This will also give your credit score a tremendous boost once you graduate, which will make buying a car or home much easier after you begin your career. Good luck!

May I ask where you live to only be paying $350 bucks per month rent? But seriously, even though the other people may seen like they are spamming, if you have time on your hands, consider learning how to make a web site. The money I earn off my web site in 1 month could pay for your rent for 3-4 months. If you combine that income with the income of a part time job, you will have tons of left over money.

No utilities? No car payment, insurance, gas tank, cable or satellite? There's a few things not listed in your budget, so dunno if the figures are accurate. If they are, your income/outgo are fairly well balanced. Lucky you. Most students are taking out loans in addition to working to pay their college and school related bills.Your rent isn't too horrible, especially if it includes utilities. Pretty much your option include parental help, loans, or yet another job to increase your income a bit, or a combination of the three. Sorry there aren't any easier options. Sounds like you've thought it out pretty well. Good luck!

What is the approximate tax rate if you get 3k per month for 6 months in texas? also, can I deduct the tuition from taxable amount? Also do you guys know any tax treaties with Turkey? Thanks a lot for help can I deduct the reimbursements that I will get for travel expenses to move new location?

For tax purposes you are treated as a Non-Resident Alien for your first 5 years. That means that you'll generally pay HIGHER taxes than citizens or residents. You pay Federal income tax, plus Social Security and Medicare. There is no income tax in Texas. See IRS Pub 514 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p514.pdf for further information.
2 :
If this is an approved CPT and you are still in your first 5 years, show your employer IRS publication 515--you are not subject to fica/mc taxes. This is a narrow exception to the fica/mc rules. You are still subject to federal income taxes. Texas does not have a state income tax. (Texas has a high sales tax and property taxes instead.) Tuition is NOT deductible for you on the 1040NR return. The 1040NR return does not have an education deduction. As a student, you can NOT claim the tuition as a work expense. While there is a US/Turkey tax treaty, it does not apply to your situation. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-trty/turkey.pdf by the way, the appropriate publications for you are pubs 519 and 515. boston goofed, it's not 514.

"A small insignificant sufi student" Is this a code?
"A small insignificant sufi student" Is this a code?
How many times have you seen this? It sounds like the complimentary closing of a letter and may feel like a statement of humility but appears at the end of many answers in R&S. Is the operative part of this statement "sufi student," and it actually functions as an identifier? I attempted some time ago to ask this question privately and I was rebuffed with no satisfactory answer. I have no wish to offend, so please forgive my continuing ignorance and sincere curiosity. I have been to Turkey, deeply admire the poems of Rumi, and know someone who spoke very highly of his meeting with Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. I am lead to this speculation by considering what is the nature of "humility" that must repeatedly shouted as if from rooftops? If this is not actually a sincere statement or wishful thinking then it is only so much rhetoric and the operative part becomes "sufi student." It then appears to be a signal that may say, "consider this answer (or question) above all others. As such it then becomes a statement to encourage preferential treatment and bias. I find this a sad suggestion considering my predisposition to admire Sufism. Humility may be the most difficult of virtues. In his "Autobiography" Benjamin Franklin said that just when he began to conquer "Humility" he found that he was proud of his humility. But I think that there may be a place for Divine Pride. If this was a statement of pride alone I would be quite understanding to see "I am a sufi student" at the end of each answer. It may also serve as an identifier but at least then there would be no hypocritical apologies. Sadly, it seems those who may have the best insight have choosen not to answer either publicly or privately. Can they claim that they have simply not seen the question? I will report back. Sweet Loraine, I recall something about creation and after so many days God took a look and saw that what he had created was "good." Certainly that is a clear example of "Divine Pride." Can you say that it is "ego" based? Something has to give. I thought someone might take up the idea that this is "wishful thinking," for a defense. It is difficult to say that giving any sort of opinion is humility in it's purist form. Sometimes the need to say or do outweighs the benefits of silence, but how can you in the same breath speak as if humility were the root of your actions and not be actively hypocritical?

i am interested to see the responses to your question...humility has been difficult for me to comprehend completely. Thanks for asking on my behalf, too. i thought your question was well posed. Perhaps we are all insignifcant, and we are certainly all students to one degree or another. i do know that i have had to eat humble pie a time or two in my life...what else is new? i am Sirius

I don't personally see the necessity of saying it. It does seem like, it can become a thing which is almost supposed to convince others that they are "humble." Or maybe in this world where everything is so taken by themselves, having a few people call themselves insignificant, is a fresh of breath air. Because, if it is genuine and they see their own smallness, then it means they have come to a good place in life. Because it is only when one sees pass their self-delusions and sees themselves naked, completely sincere -- all their flaws, defects, scars can this one begin to develop. Sincerity with oneself can only come by through humility.

I think even 'Divine pride' is ego based, but I can understand where old Ben was coming from. Why are you offended by how another might choose to identify himself? sufi student lol just kidding

It is said (and I paraphrase): If the oceans were ink and the words of Allah were written upon the sky, using this ink, a mere fraction of the greater meaning of God could be written. Even a Sufi master holds only a lake of knowledge that is made relevant through sharing of this knowledge with followers. I believe it is proper to acknowledge how limited ones knowledge is, until God inside is known (enlightenment). On humility. Any thoughts of greatness through perceived action takes away from the creative result of an expression. If an expression, work of art, or written effort is truly creative; then it is given freely from the heart and will touch the heart of another without pause and without thought of the creator. Only then is it a message from one person to another a true communication; one given only in the context of love. It prompts an expression of love from the recipient without desire. Desire on the creators part, removes creativity and ask for submission of one person to another. True humility comes from humbleness, yet is the most dominate powerful force on earth. It takes great courage to wield such power and many who gain the sense of it choose to own. That choice alone will bring their destruction and the destruction of others. In Christianity, it is referred to by the phrase "the meek shall inherit the earth". It does mean weak by any means. It means that a meek person has the courage to accept what is and not use others in desire. It prepares a person for a chance to connect with power beyond description. People fear that which has no fear, for they have traveled through the valley of death and survived the dark night of the soul. Humility is part of this preparation. Find the center of your mind and know what I am speaking of. The terror exists in all of us, expect those who have survived. Without being meek, you will not make it. Humility, humbleness and courage are demanded. It is smart to tread carefully in matters of the spirit. It is smart to remind the self what is at stake in every spiritual assertion until you know. No I do not believe it is a code. It is a reminder... Until you know for sure.
