I am a US citizen who spent all of 2008 abroad, what is my tax obligation?
I am a grad student and spent the entire year in Turkey. I took on a management consulting job that payed 'under the table' and I am wondering what my obligation is to the IRS (the position didn't pay well, just enough to keep me afloat). Thanks for your advice, I am having a time trying to solve this puzzle. I am sure your answer will be of great help to others in my position.

Congratulations, you have self-employment income. As a US citizen, you are taxed on worldwide income. See IRS publication 54. You will file a 1040 tax return, reporting the income on schedule C (or C-EZ) and fill out schedule SE. If you spent 330 days out of 365 in Turkey, you will also use form 2555 (or form 2555-EZ) to exclude up to $80-85K of the income. This means you will probably owe $0 income tax and 15.3% SE tax on the money. PS, if you had a foreign bank account and it had $10,000 or more in it at any time, you need to file a form TDF 90-22.1 in June. No tax, but it creates a papertrail and the fines if you don't are horrible.

All income earned, foreign or domestic, legal or illegal, above board or under the table is taxable. If your are "in" a foreign country for 330 of any 365 day period, yoiu may apply for an exclusion. Some accountants may tell you that you do not owe Self Employment Tax...ie, if you were an employee, not an independent contractor, you would fail the government's own Self Employment test, so if you were not self employed, you would not owe the tax...your foreign employer was not required to pay FICA ...this is a 'grey' area

How to pay for detox from perscription drugs?
How to pay for detox from perscription drugs?
My mom is addicted to Norco and Xanax. She desperately wants to get off, but all these detox programs in our area cost thousands of dollars we don't have. She is currently living off of SSI and I am a full time college student. Is there some way we could do this cheaply or for free? Are there any charities out there that do this kind of thing for people? She's been addicted for over five years and her health is starting to deteriorate as a result. She's tried cold turkey, as well as every relevant phone number in the book (including local churches). It seems like we've exhausted every possible option we know of. Any suggestions? I live in northern California, San Fransisco Bay Area

There are programs available that are free. You did not mention the state you live. I had a family member who was addicted to prescription drugs and the detox (2 week stay) was free. She was receiving little income before her treatment,,so I'm not sure if low-income was a factor.

I don't even know what Norco and Xanax are.... but I'm sure you could find something to replace them with that looks similar. The placebo effect might soften the blow for long enough for the cold turkey thing to work. Random note: the only reason cold turkey wouldn't work is if she is particularly weak-willed. She needs to strengthen her resolve.

check with www.visaworld.co.uk or www.skyteam.com or turkish embassy in london.

If you need a visa to travel to that country, you need to get it before you fly.

have fun on your trip to turkey...i loved it there. but yes you do need a visa to go to turkey and i copied and pasted the info for you. United Kingdom: Ordinary and official passport holders are required to have visa to enter Turkey. Ordinary passport holders can obtain three month-multiple entry visas at the Turkish border gates. I also posted a site for you regarding travel in Turkey...again have fun and I envy you.

I know if you fly to Istanbul (Ataturk airport) that you can purchase the visa right there in the terminal just before passport control...and you can pay with credit card. I don't know about other airports in Turkey though. 3 month, multiple-entry Visa for U.S. and Canadian citizens currently costs 60 USD or 45 Euros. I don't remember the cost for other nationalities.
