Can I leave Schengen area and return as a tourist for 90 days after a year on a visa?
I've been living in France for a year on an au pair/student visa, can I leave Schengen for a few days, i.e. Turkey, and come back to Schengen for 90 days as a tourist right at the expiration of my visa? I just want to make sure that I'm not breaking any laws and will be permitted back in Schengen in the future.

You don't say what country you're actually from. But if it's the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or any other country that has visa waiver with the Schengen Zone, then it is possible for you to do this. A day or two before your au pair/student visa expires, leave the Schengen Zone and go to the UK or other non-Schengen country, stay for a few days then go back to the Schengen Zone. Make sure you get your passport stamped when you re-enter and you'll have a full 90 days to travel the Schengen area. You mention going to Turkey. Just be aware that you will need to buy a visa at the Turkish border, before entering the country. Not really worthwhile if you'll only be there for a few days.
