Job Opportunities in Turkey?
Merhaba, my Turkish friends. I am an American student, and I am looking at possibly moving to Turkey within the next 5 years. I have already completed over a year of college, but I have not yet decided on what to study. I want to study something that would open up jobs for me both in America and in Turkey. I am absolutely interested in teaching English, so I will be getting a certificate in TESOL (or a similar program). I do know, however, that it is beneficial to have a degree along with a TESOL certificate. So at this point, I am considering all the different things I could study. Hospitality Administration is something I am leaning towards, but it would only be an Associate's Degree. Would that be enough? I have a passion for cultures and tourism, and I would love to be thinking about those passions when I'm looking for a job. What will employers be looking for? What kind of a degree would be beneficial? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, friends.

OK, if you are already interested in getting a TESOL certification, you are good to go. Most Turkish institutions who operate in teaching English as a secondary language do not require you to have any other degree above a High School diploma if you are a native speaker of English. However, I would recommend getting an English or an Education degree just so that you are more accustomed to teaching, also while you are studying for your degree you could take some Turkish classes just to be on the safe side. And if you want to work in a private school teaching English, they might ask about previous teaching experience that involved teaching children.

hopdedik answered some of te points and i wantto clarify just one point, hospitality management of sth like that should have been the last thing to be thought as an investment for living in Turkey because all the system is entirely different here plus you should have an ultimate atlent of communication. I dont like to put people down but you should be very very well prepared for that. I would also recommend international relations, management, finance or any other degree if you would like to be hired in Turkish univerities and continue your life as an academician. However, it is much more easier to come and work here after studying in one of the good ranking US universities, so you better watch out what you d like to study that wouldnt be a branch whose industry is underdeveloped here in Turkey such as nuclear energy or genetics. On the other hand, with a civil engineering diploma you can find aquite many companies to hire you, for instance... Search more, good luck!

Hmm, i graduated from an american highschool, so i know a bit about the foreigner teachers. i remember we had teachers with various degrees, there were the ones with PhDs and master's degrees and also highschool graduates with certificates. We had very good turkish teachers esp good at teaching grammar, so any native speaker english teacher was ok. foreigners usually did speaking and reading. but i didn't meet any foreigner teacher that i found insufficient. of course a degree is better. but i guess roughly a certificate is enough. it's been few years since i graduated but i guess the conditions are still the same. in schools giving english education (most of the courses are in english) you'll be paid the highest. there are many of these schools in istanbul, ankara, izmir especially, you may contact the administrations of these schools. http://www.sev.org.tr/ my school is under that association. there are six schools listed on top of the page, in the green area, under the topic "eÄŸitim", go to the website of each school, choose english and read about employment opportunities. and also that is one of the best private schools in turkey http://portal.robcol.k12.tr/ usually foreigner teachers go abroad for the higher salaries, stay 2-3 years and go back to their countries. but there were teachers who stayed in turkey for long years and even got citizenship. some of my teachers were here before i was born.... so you may stay longer if you want. i have less idea about the hospitality business. it is improving, but i guess it is different than in us. there are famous hotels like hilton, ritz carlton, so i guess it would be a good start if you contacted the administrations of these hotels. my friend had a degree in business from germany, and did internship in a similar hotel. in turkey, there is a degree "tourism administration" and they work in hotels after they finish the uni. in various positions.. good luck!
