Vacation in Turkey: Cost of food, hostels, etc.?

Vacation in Turkey: Cost of food, hostels, etc.?
Being a student, I need to travel on an extreme budget. Can anyone tell me the general cost of things in Turkey in dollars? How much is the street food? What is the cost of restaurants (of course, the ones students go to)? How much do hostels cost there? How much can a person get by with for one day? Whatever tallies of costs you can provide will be appreciated. Thank you!

You can cheap food everywhere. Turkish fresh fruit and vegetables are cheap and various than many countries. Try to buy from street markets. American fast food is expensive. Stay away from western coffee shops, try tea! Tea is the cheapest drink everywhere! It is usually free at restaurants after your meal. Try restaurants where locals go. Do not be afraid of trying new things. Not too much backpackers guest houses or hostels around but can find cheap hotels. Prices varies according to cities. A cheap example from 2 years ago: 20-30$ per night off season . Do not forget! room rates are usually for 1 person not per room! Be sure about the rate before check in! Have a nice trip! you can have a good time with a limited budget in Turkey don't worry!

What has Turkey invented/discovered that impacted the world?

What has Turkey invented/discovered that impacted the world?
I had to read a book for one of my courses. The author stated that the Turks and Hindus never had any good ideas, and that he was thankfull that the French education system taught students the ideas of the Romans. I know...what the heck? My favorite part is when he contradicts himself in the book and states, "Does it follow that we shall then cease to associate with each other, to help each other, to love and succor our unfortunate brothers, to study the secrets of nature, and to strive to improve ourselves to the best of our abilities?" Again...what the heck? He now states that society should help each other out. But then why is he slamming Turks and Hindus for not helping out improve our society, when in fact they did? And if he loves to respect and associate with his "brothers," then why does he go around dissing turks/hindus?

The Serce, the Kartal, the Dogan and the Sahin by Tofas. The Turks discovered that stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria for which I am grateful and cured. And the aforementioned Yogurt! and all other yummies. AND THE DOLMUS!!! What a great idea, I wish we had dolmusler here. The Akbil. The Hamam. And the first female military pilot of the world Ms. Sabiha Gokcen!!!! I'm not sure why I like her so much?! But I do. And the Turks are responsible for domesticating animals.

Ulcer and bacteria relationships were discovered by Robin Warren an Australian. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6338357.stm http://www.turkgastro.org/text.php?id=217 Discovery 1: Helicobacter pylori In 1979, Robin Warren, a pathologist at Royal Perth Hospital, observed spiral bacteria in a biopsy specimen taken from the stomach of a man with nonulcer dyspepsia (Marshall, 1989). Using a microscope, Warren saw severe gastritis and noticed microorganisms coating the mucosa (see Thagard, forthcoming-b for details about the use of the microscope). Over the next two years, Warren observed the bacteria in many specimens, usually associated with gastritis (Warren and Marshall, 1983). Turkish Doctors in Bursa are on the leading edge of future break throughs http://rheumatology.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/44/10/1327 For fun, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xciMO5Megr0 On the serious side http://www.muslimheritage.com/uploads/TurkishScience.pdf If you've ever been to a shopping mall or train station you've probably been to a kiosk. But the kiosk as a building type is not a new invention. As a building type it was first introduced by the Suljuks as a small building attached to the main mosque. It consisted of a domed hall with open arched sides, gradually evolved into a summer house used by Ottoman sultans, perhaps the most famous of these kiosks are the Cinili koshk (kiosk in Turkish) and Baghdad koshk. The first was built in 1473 by Mohammad al-Fatih at the Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, and consists of a two storey building topped with a dome and having open sides overlooking the gardens of the palace. The Baghdad Koshk was also built at the Topkapi Palace in 1638-39, by Sultan Murad IV. The building is again domed offering direct views onto the gardens and park of the Palace as well as the architecture of the city of Istanbul. Sultan Ahemd III (1703-1730) also built a glass room of the Sofa kiosk at the Topkapi Palace incorporating some Western elements, such as the gilded brazier designed by the elder John Claude Duplessis which was given to the Ottoman Ambassador by King Louis 15th. The first English contact with Turkish Kiosk came through Lady Wortley Montagu (1689-1762), the wife of the English ambassador to Constantinople, who in a letter written in 1 April 1717 to Anne Thistlethwayte, mentions a “chiosk describing it as ‘raised by 9 or 10 steps and enclosed with gilded lattices (Halsband, 1965 ed.). Where would we be without, INVENTION: Trouser Fly INVENTOR: An Unknown Turk YEAR: Before the 1700s HOW INVENTED: According to Allen Edwardes: "The Turks introduced the fly to Europe between the 18th and 19th Century. It was a button model, which lasted until the introduction of the zipper.

Hindus are found mathematics. For Turk's which century is he asking ? Answer is too long .
5 :
That you can become an empire without touching people's faith and life style. I can't think of a better contribution to humanity than this. And Hindus came up with the idea that the way to achieve happiness is achieving the self and this idea has affected many other religions, including Islam and Christianity. Again, I can't think of a more relevant contribution than this. That author doesn't have a clue. Edit: I saw this link in eksisozluk, people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_inventions
6 :
Before I get to the point I have a couple of comments to make: Kiosks derive from an ancient Greek architectural form, the so called "Tholos", which is a round building surrounded and supported by piles. The most known one is the tholos of Delfi. Also hamams are the greek-roman "Thermae", an invention of the Hellenistic era, a primary sample of which we can see (in ruins) at the city of Dion (secred city of ancient Macedonians, under Mount Olympos), and developed ones all over the cities of the Roman Empire. Among the most famous are the Caracalla's Termae in Rome. Bysantines kept this tradition, and Ottomans succeded them giving back to these baths the social caracter they had in Roman times (places for relaxation and socializing as well). Which leads me to the heart of my answer: Even more important than inventing something is to be wise and open enough to maintain what you find or adopt what is useful and beautiful, no matter where it comes from. Ottomans did that, either it was Bysantine or Persian or European. But what we could define as their top achievement is Diplomacy. In fact, Turkiye is well known for her diplomatic "machine", in relation with both its structure and its effectiveness and power. And I think that had a great impact to the world for hundrends of years.

Halt etmiş o author. Piri Reis; an Ottoman admiral drew the first true world map in 16th century. The map was showing even Antarctica. While europeans were still fighting if the world is flat or not, Uluğ Bey and his student Ali Kuşçu established the first big observatory in 15th century and succeed to determine some stars' distances to earth almost perfectly. While those romans were writing linefull of letters to describe numbers, Harezmi invented the number "zero" which all the world uses now. And he also invented the binary system, which is the main element in computers and electronics. Ebul İzz El Cezeri invented the first robots and automatic machines of the world on 12th century. These machines used in Artuks palace in Diyarbakir. He is considered as the father of cybernetics. I don't know about Turks, but Armenians have lots of lots of inventors and scientists. the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-XeraUMqeI EDIT: To Leprechaun, You are a Gentleman to address me with kindness (dear?), I learned that from this section (none related answer, not that my answer is out,no), but never misused it. I read your answer learned somethings and gave you thumbs up, (bobo was good too). I am not responsible for the thumbs down you got. You should blame your friend "lylul" who is laughing at your answer out loud, and tries to correct you, not me. I didn't really know any Turk who is famous for doing something for the world, had an impact or invented anything, so I thought to give you an idea what is your friend asking. Honestly didn't you like the link?
