Advice for someone going to Turkey?

Advice for someone going to Turkey?
I'm from Ireland and I'll be going to study in Turkey for 3 months as part of a student exchange programme. What should I expect from young adults in Turkey? One thing I'm not sure about is religion. Is Turkey a very religious country? Should I be open about my atheism or will this alienate people? Also, as alcohol consumption is haram what do young people there do for fun?

turkey can be considered religious, but the government is secular. and the youth and the people in general are very tollerent. as long as you don't insult them. unless they bring it up don't mention your atheism. alcohol is haram but turks don't really care about that rule. we drink(i never drank in my life) turkey is one of the most tolerant countries on earth. as long as you don't insult us. than you'll feel what hell is. btw, forget everything you see on the news. stereotyping will get you nowhere, it is important to note: it snows in turkey ,

You didn't say which city you are going but i assume it's İstanbul. Turkey is more conservative compared to western European countries, and people are sensitive about their culture and their religion. But don't worry Turkish people are tolerant in general and they love guests. Nobody will care about your atheism unless you make them think like you don't respect their religion (Islam). But i recommend you to stay out of religious discussions just in case. Yes alcohol is haram in Islam, but Turkish people drink anyways and there is a live nightlife in Istanbul (bars, concerts, etc). I didn't hear of anyone who got bored in Istanbul. There will be cultural differences of course, and some little misunderstandings because of different languages but nothing that mutual respect won't solve out. Have a good time!

Dont worry. I assume you are not going to study theology, so relax. :-) Young ppl are pretty cool and you can have lots of fun with them.. I studiest abroad till my senior year in high school. I had the same worries as you when my parents forced me to go back with them to Turkeybecause I did not know Turkey so well. I finished school here and believe me, 2 years here in high school was so much fun! Hundred times better than in Germany.! I wont even mention university.Youll be surprized when you get here. Modern, open, friendly and cool friends! Have fun and good luck!

Which is an easier method to study in the US? Being a transfer student, or applying with SAT from scratch?

Which is an easier method to study in the US? Being a transfer student, or applying with SAT from scratch?
I'm currently enrolled in METU, one of the best schools in Turkey. If I wanted to continue the rest of my undergraduate course in the US, which one of these is the better option to follow? Also, I would be glad if you could give details for financial aid for both of the options.

I hope in our current financial situation ($12 trillion in debt and counting with obama spending like a drunken sailor) we aren't giving financial aid to foreigners...if you come here please be prepared to pay your own way...we have enough people sucking off the government teats, we don't need anymore, especially foreigners.

Try to do the easiest. I would do SAT.

It is usually easier to get in as a transfer student. You already have a collegiate record, and schools like to see that. Starting from scratch looking like a new student doesn't look as appealing to them. Which colleges were you thinking about? There is still a lot of financial aid available...especially if you are a minority, posess a special skill, or are going into a certain field (a lot of specialized fields (ex: microbiology especially DNA study) offer full scholerships) The best way to get information from the colleges you are considering is to call them. Their councelors are amazingly well educated on grants, scholerships, and financial aid.

Why do we eat turkey on Thanksgiving?

Why do we eat turkey on Thanksgiving?
I teach English to students from other countries. We've been talking about Thanksiving recently, and my students keep asking why Americans eat turkey on the holiday. The only answer I can come up with is "it's traditional." I've tried to research the answer, but I discovered that there's no record that the pilgrims really ate turkey on Thanksgiving, which is the answer that most people give. Can anybody give me a good explanation to give my students?

i would imagine that's a given, wild turkey would have been the game of the season. i suspect they had fish and maybe some other type of game as well.

Turkey is a new world food. It is easier to hunt than deer, and is large enough to be appealing as a food for a feast. I think over the years it has become symbolic of the new things that the Pilgrims came across in the New World.
3 :
Well i am only 10 so i wild take a guess. Maybe it is because that was the only animal they could hunt or something, or it just tasted good! lol
4 :
Cause in the past they ate DUCK and deer with beans and i dont think we wanna eat ducks :P
5 :
Because during those times mostly in America other than deer, and bison, turkey was seemed as very plentiful and festive in a way. But a lot of things served today weren't in thanksgiving like pies because there wasn't enough sugar.

Well, the only two items that we know the pilgrims ate are wild fowl and venison. I have been researching this question as well because my eighth grade students have been asking the same question. One answer I found is that Queen Elizabeth delighted in the taste of turkey. When she found out the Spanish Armada had sailed to fight her navy, she ordered a second turkey at the dinner table. It became a favorite of the people in England; thus, they started this tradition of eating turkey during a meal to give thanks. This would make sense since wild fowl was in abundance.

Because the Pilgrims were wayy too slow to catch any other type of meat, so thats why we, to this day, chase around turkeys to put on our dinner tables for thanksgiving dinner.

how to create a picture of a turkey using cells in a spreadsheet?
I need an activity for students using the computer for Thanksgiving. I had an activity and can't find it. It was using cells and marking with certain letter keys and it made the image of a turkey and spelled out Happy Thanksgiving.
